Expert Analysis
Guilherme Torres | Prep Soccer Scout
An extremely technical and intelligent outside back, Cortellessa is a stud on the right side of FC Dallas ‘ backline. With a very solid all-around game, he’s one of the pillars of the team, delivering high-level production both defensively and offensively. He’s excellent at reading opponents when defending out wide and does a great job of taking up space from them to force them back. Cortellessa is also very skilled with the ball, being capable of supporting the team’s offense in a variety of ways. An elite crosser, he’s very dangerous every time he gets the ball to the end line, but he also has the vision and the skill to come inside and operate as an additional playmaker for his team.

Cortellessa, who recently made his pro debut with North Texas, plays right back for FC Dallas and is one of the pillars of the team with his solid all-around game. He’s a truly complete player, who masters every aspect of the game and is capable of making an impact on both sides of the ball. Cortellessa is a very solid defender, who reads opponents well and consistently comes up with the correct moves to stop them, getting into the right spots and making strong defensive actions. He also offers a lot in the final third, making smart runs off the ball, driving it efficiently and appearing inside the penalty box to finish chances. He also likes to come inside and operate as a playmaker, playing this role with tremendous efficiency thanks to his vision and passing accuracy.

Cortellessa had one of his typical flawless performances at right back and was an important element in Dallas’ victory. The defender was particularly important in the second half, when the Dynamo tried to create chances through his side and he responded well, keeping things under control there. Cortellessa didn’t get to the end line very often, but was very efficient when he pushed forward, making smart combination plays with his teammates and never forcing plays or turning the ball over. He was also very vocal and communicated very well with his teammates, keeping the backline organized during the entire match.

A US Youth National Team member, Cortellessa offered tremendous solidness on the right side of FC Dallas’ backline. He can play multiple positions at a very high level, but was in excellent form at right back, using his very complete game to make an impact on both sides of the ball. It’s hard to point out a defining skill or trait in Cortellessa’s game because he’s very good at everything and much of his efficiency comes from his all-around game, paired with his high soccer IQ. He was also the team’s captain in the tournament and displayed some strong leadership.
