The Philadelphia schools played a thinned-out regular season and postseason schedule last year, but plenty of underclassmen showed their talent to earn preseason accolades this year.
Among the top players, [player_tooltip player_id="15077" first="Beckett" last="Wenger"], [player_tooltip player_id="15311" first="Simeon" last="Dorsey"] and [player_tooltip player_id="15159" first="Gavin" last="Steele"] are receiving NCAA Division I interest and highlight the group.
Here’s our preseason Philadelphia All-Metro squad:
<strong>FORWARDS:</strong> Souderton senior [player_tooltip player_id="15131" first="Dillon" last="Barbieri"] returns following a season where he earned Suburban One first-team all-league honors and second-team Reporter/Times Herald Montgomery honors. ... La Salle junior [player_tooltip player_id="15307" first="Seth" last="Michalak"] was a key reason for the team’s offensive surge last season. The Reporter/Times Herald Montgomery first-team selection led a team that netted four or more goals eight times in last year’s abbreviated season.
<strong>MIDFIELDERS:</strong> Boyertown’s [player_tooltip player_id="15077" first="Beckett" last="Wenger"] is one of the top high school-playing seniors in Pennsylvania. Last season he scored 12 goals in 12 matches as Boyertown repeated as Pioneer Athletic Conference champs. Wenger, who was a Mercury News first-team pick, plays club soccer for PA Dominion FC. ... Kennett senior [player_tooltip player_id="15159" first="Gavin" last="Steele"] may emerge as one of the top players in the state this fall. Steele is receiving Division I college interest. Last season, he earned first-team DLN and all-league honors after scoring five goals and adding six assists. ... Conestoga senior [player_tooltip player_id="15304" first="Sebastian" last="Tis"] is a defensive mid who earned first-team all-league, All-Main Line and All-DLM honors. He had three goals and a pair of assists, but his defending stood out. ... Devon Prep senior [player_tooltip player_id="15100" first="Chris" last="Walton"] was a first-team All-Catholic League and All-Main Line selection after leading Devon Prep to a district title and a state tournament berth. Walton led the team in goals and assists. ... La Salle senior [player_tooltip player_id="15302" first="Sean" last="Jennings"] was a second-team Reporter/Times Herald Montgomery last season and his return is part of the reason La Salle has high expectations in 2021.
<strong>DEFENDERS:</strong> Pennridge junior [player_tooltip player_id="15309" first="Shane" last="Velez"] was a first-team all-league and Reporter/Times Herald Montgomery selection. While solid on defense, he’s also dangerous on set pieces, and even scored the goal to lifted Pennridge to the district playoffs last year. ... Conestoga senior [player_tooltip player_id="15311" first="Simeon" last="Dorsey"] was a first-team All-Main Line and All DLN selection last year after leading a team that surrendered only 10 goals in 14 matches. Dorsey contributed to the offense with two goals and three assists and he’s a Division I prospect. ... Bishop Shanahan senior [player_tooltip player_id="15151" first="Evan" last="Cunningham"] earned first-team all-league and second-team all DLN honors last year. Cunningham was the lone junior field player on the Ches-Mont National first team.
<strong>GOALKEEPER: </strong>West Chester East senior [player_tooltip player_id="15192" first="Johnny" last="Regester"] posted five shutouts in 10 matches and played a key role in six one-goal victories for the Vikings. Regester was named the Ches-Mont National MVP in 2020.
