Girls Academy Champions Cup 2010 Best XI

The Girls Academy Champions Cup wrapped up this week from Florida. The event featured the top teams in the Girls Academy vying for a championship. [program_tooltip program_id='283295' first='City' last='SC'] lifted the hardware in the 2010 age group. Below is the Prep Soccer Best XI from the event in the 2010 age group.    It was tricky to pick a goalkeeper for this spot because there were so many worthy candidates. I elected to go with Galego because of the game-deciding plays she provided during the few games in Florida.   There were other goalkeepers who gave up fewer goals, but there were no goalkeepers with more highlight plays. She was so good off her line for her team. Her quick reactions and her timing were standouts - and stopped a number of goals. She also made some exceptional diving saves especially against Tophat.     Fry was outstanding at this event. Her performance against [program_tooltip program_id='287540' first='South' last='[program_tooltip program_id='283511' first='Valley' last='Surf']'] forced me to go back and watch more of her game film. The center back was dominant. She took over games at times and helped her squad to a 3-1 record at the event - coming up a little short in the quarterfinal against SJEB.   Fry is a well-rounded center back who can be a leader at the next level. She's a physical defender who thrives in the 1v1 situation. She is also excellent on the ball. She hits a range of passes with accuracy.   The Beadling star is probably a known commodity in the 2028 class from local college scouts, but she deserves national attention from the top programs after the performances in Florida.     This almost seems like a misprint, but Mason appears to play goalkeeper for her high school team and plays as a center back for her club team. She's an incredible athlete. Mason's best performance of the week came against Galaxy SC. She was everywhere in that game - interceptions, blocks, tackles, and distributing the ball with purpose and accuracy. Mason is a young 2010, but she's definitely one to watch for the future.     Ward was one of the stars of the [program_tooltip program_id='287540' first='South' last='[program_tooltip program_id='283511' first='Valley' last='Surf']'] squad. She led the defense with her fearless, ferocious approach. She's strong and has excellent technique in the tackle. She stands players up with her defensive skill.   Ward's best moments came in the open field tackles when her athleticism, ability to read the game, and competitiveness was allowed to shine. She's got unlimited potential as a defender with that type of mentality.     The week started well with Spokane Shadow's dominant opening win over NEFC, but the squad failed to grab another victory from the event. Despite the challenging games, Gallagher was excellent in her center back role. She was a leader for her squad. She showed line-splitting passing with her vision. She also displayed great closing speed and relentless tackling. Gallagher is a center back on the rise for Washington.     Morris was a bright spot of the Indy Premier side, which earned a spot in the quarterfinal round and had a number of solid performances throughout the week in Florida. The defender was sharp in the tackle, always alert to the ball, and tactically positioned in the right spot. She sprang the attack with her quick thinking in the transition moments of the game and helped generate chances for her side.     Gresik was the player of the event in the 2010 age group. The midfielder led her team to the title with her sublime control of the game. From her understanding of passing angles and opening opportunities for teammates to her ability to break pressure with her close control, Gresik showed throughout the week in Florida that she deserves to be in the conversation among the best attacking midfielders in the country in the 2010 group.     Hejduk finished the event with only one goal scored, but she was a standout player in every game for Columbus United. The way she presses and provides a frontline for the defense really set the tone for Columbus United and contribute to the success of the team.   Sydney Thomas was also a bright spot of the attack for Columbus United.     Lisak was the leading scorer on the Championship team. The forward finished with five goals from the event. The activity she provided really opened up the game for the [program_tooltip program_id='283295' first='City' last='SC'] attack. She was an energy setter from the opening whistle. She consistently put herself in the right spots to finish off chances and showed her efficiency in front of goal.     Tophat likely feels unfulfilled after losing in the semifinal, but there is still a playoff upcoming for the redemption of this squad. There is plenty of reason to hold their head high, and included in that is York's recent play.   She was all over the game tape every outing in Florida. She was the player most featured in almost any game because of her action on the ball and her dynamic attacking quality. She finished the event with two goals, but she had countless attacking actions and key passes. York was a key difference-maker.     The SJEB forward was the leading scorer at the event with seven goals in four games. It's a remarkable feat considering these are the best of the best defense/defenders in the Girls Academy. She was still highly effective, even though everyone at the tournament knew who to mark.   Brownlee's goal against [program_tooltip program_id='283295' first='City' last='SC'] was a good example of what she brings to any team. She forces the opposition to always be alert. She can score from basically anywhere with the ball on either foot. She's a rare talent, and a player who is going to make a difference at the next level.
