FAB 50: Playoff results shake up rankings
After a season-long build of accolades, it all came crashing down with postseason exits for a number of boys and girls teams last week.
This happens every year.
And the net result is quite a lot of shuffling on the first ranking in November.
The big winners this past week were York (Ill.) and Oregon (Wis.) boys and Anthony Wayne (Ohio) and Moon (Pa.) girls.
York won the Illinois Class 3A state title, stunning Fremd (Ill.) 4-0 in the final. That result helps York vault to No. 12 this week, ahead of Wisconsin power Marquette (Wis.), whose only loss was to that same Fremd squad. Speaking of Wisconsin and Marquette, Oregon vaults into the Top 25 for the first time ever after claiming the Division 2 state title. Oregon had wins over Division 1 runner-up Hudson and Whitefish Bay, in the Division 2 final, that were more convincing than Marquette. That said, Marquette also went perfect in Wisconsin, while Oregon had three ties. None-the-less, Marquette and Oregon finish 1-2 in Wisconsin and both are in the Top 25.
Anthony Wayne girls, meanwhile, avenged its only loss, hammering preseason favorite Strongsville 4-0 to reach this week’s state semifinals. Since Anthony Wayne already was ranked in the Top 20, there wasn’t much upward movement, but the team is posed for its best FAB 50 finish in years. Moon, like Anthony Wayne, delivered a surprisingly one-sided victory in the WPIAL 4A final and moves on to the state tournament as a strong title contender.
