FAB 50: Final rankings are taking shape
St. Ignatius (Ohio) was pushed to overtime but emerged with a third straight state title and a lock on this year’s No. 1 boys ranking.
Meanwhile, the top seven spots on the girls rankings are sealed, as well.
The 2021 fall high school season enters the final week of play with a handful of states playing and only a few ranking positions yet to be determined.
In boys soccer, the Pennsylvania Class 4A state playoffs this week will decide the nation’s top public school team. Current FAB 50 No. 3 Conestoga will hold that spot if it wins the 4A crown. Seneca Valley, currently No. 13, could leap into that conversation if it wins the 4A title. St. Ignatius remains the overall No. 1, followed by St. Benedict’s (N.J.). Martin Luther King (N.Y.) checks in at No. 4, and that was set prior to MLK’s win Monday night in the PSAL championship. MLK will finish the season ranked either No. 3 or 4, the highest-ever final ranking for this perennial New York powerhouse. Seton Hall rounds out the Top 5 following its state title win on Sunday.
In girls soccer, Homestead (Ind.) finished a perfect season three weeks ago to grab the No. 1 ranking, and there’s no reason for a change in that spot. St. Anthony’s (N.Y.) will finish No. 2, followed by Bearden (Tenn.), Mount Notre Dame (Ohio), Noblesville (Ind.), Notre Dame Academy (Ky.), and Massapequa (N.Y.). The rest of the Top 10 — Hingham (Mass.), Camas (Wash.), and Central Dauphin (Pa.) — each compete in state semifinal matches this weekend, with the No. 8 spot remaining to be settled.
