Regional Rankings: Playoff surprises lead to new region No. 1s
Results get magnified this time of year as the postseason serves as the final statement for state, region and national rankings.
This week, three girls and one boys regions see new No. 1 squads as last week’s top-ranked teams were all upset.
Skyline (Utah) girls have been waiting since ending its season two weeks ago with a 20-0 showing. A loss by St. Pius (N.M.) in the New Mexico 4A final allowed Skyline to inherit the West No. 1 ranking. Central Dauphin (Pa.) girls moved to No. 1 in the Mid-Atlantic after Good Counsel (Md.) was upset in the WCAC final. Camas (Wash.) girls also inherited the Northwest No. 1 spot after longtime national power Portland Jesuit (Ore.) made a surprise early exit in the Oregon 6A playoffs.
The lone boys No. 1 region change took place in the Midwest as Rockhurst Jesuit (Mo.) jumps to the top of the list following a playoff loss by SLUH (Mo.).
