Regional Rankings: Revolving door continues in California
Another week, a new set of No. 1 teams in California.
Servite boys were upset by Huntington Beach, turning the California-South and state No. 1 rankings over to defending Los Angeles Section champ Birmingham.
Santa Margarita vaulted all the way to No. 1 in the California-South regional rankings thanks to a slew of upsets at the Best in the West event and a loss by former top-ranked Cathedral Catholic.
The holiday season brings about a number of invitational events that will continue to create ranking churn. In most cases, the same teams will remain in the rankings, but swap places as results from such events merit change.
This past weekend, Nolan Catholic (Texas) girls traveled to Florida for the NEPS-Florida event, where the Texas squad went 1-1-1, beating Archbishop McCarthy (Fla.), tying Lourdes (Fla.), and losing to St. Thomas Aquinas (Fla.). The Best in the West crowns 10 varsity champions from a monster of a tournament that features more than 110 schools. Temecula Valley (Calif.), Aliso Niguel (Calif.), Capistrano Valley (Calif.), and Corona del Mar (Calif.) were the winners in their respective 12-team bracket and also received a major move up in the rankings.
