Winter FAB 50: New No. 1 in boys soccer
In this article:
Simply put, the Best in the West made the girls rankings a mess!
And if that wasn’t enough, the boys No. 1 was upset, turning the top ranking over to Birmingham (Calif.).
The focus this past week was the Best in the West girls event. Temecula Valley (Calif.) emerged from a load ABCD Bracket to win the top flight and jump from No. 34 to No. 19 in this week’s girls Winter FAB 50. Aliso Niguel (Calif.) and Corona del Mar (Calif.) also won bracket titles to leap into the Top 20 this week.
Such ranking turmoil is the case in California soccer at this time of the year.
There are a number of tournaments and showcases that pit most of the state’s top programs in California during this three-week stretch. The results often reveal how razor-thin the level of play is among these nationally ranked programs. Take, for example, Temecula Valley’s showing. Earlier in the season, Temecula Valley lost to Corona Santiago as Santiago climbed into the Top 5. But, at the Best in the West, Santiago tied its group matches and did not advance in the championship flight, while Temecula Valley won the event. So, when it comes to the rankings, the most recent results hold more value, and thus Temecula Valley moves up.
In boys soccer this past week, the major surprise came with Huntington Beach stunned top-ranked Servite by scoring two early goals and hanging on for a 2-1 victory. Servite’s loss allows Birmingham, which was No. 2, to slide into the No. 1 position.
Outside of a few West Coast events and a Louisiana showcase, there will not be much high school action over the next two weeks. However, the state, regional, and FAB 50 rankings will continue to be updated on their normal weekly schedule.
