The event is a culmination of earlier competition in the elite girls club soccer league from December where teams earned their spot in this knock-out round of the tournament.
The event is a showcase of the top clubs from the Girls Academy with the winner of the event being crowned on March 14 or 15 depending on the age group.
The Girls Academy Champions League will feature some of the top players in the country in the various age group with U.S. Youth National Team and college scouts in attendance. There are also some hidden gems in the mix as well from the classes of 2022 and 2023 who are looking to catch the eye of a college coach while in Florida.
Here are six uncommitted players to watch from the Girls Academy Champions League – Florida in the U17 and U19 age groups.
PLAYER – CLUB – GRAD YEAR
Poppy Honeybone – OL Reign 03/04 – 2023 – Highlights
Poppy Honeybone is easily the best name you will come across in the youth game. She is a relatively new addition to the OL Reign squad (she joined during the 2020/2021 season) after electing to play for her high school team while Reign was part of the DA, which might explain why she is still uncommitted. The 5-foot-10 attacking midfielder is smooth on the ball with nimble footwork. She’s a hard worker who is fiercely competitive. She has an eye for the goal and offers an attacking quality from the role on her own or with her distribution. OL Reign opens up the event against Colorado Rush. Her teammates Mia Banchero and Julie De Andrade Thuau, both 2022 grads, are also top uncommitted players to watch.
Capri Oliviero – SC Wave 03/04 – 2023
Capri Oliviero is recently back from an injury and should be noted as a top player to watch from the 2023 class. The defensive midfielder is one of the smartest players in the Girls Academy. She is a student of the game and stands out as a key piece for the SC Wave side. She has exceptional field awareness and does a good job continuously scanning for her teammates, as well as potential passing lanes to break down the opposition. She is going to be a good fit for the right program at the next level and does offer the versatility to compete as a center back in the right possession system. SC Wave opens up the event against Tophat Gold on Thursday.
Satya Tarafdar – TSJ FC Virginia 05 – 2023 – Highlights
The first thing you notice with Tarafdar is her defensive skills. She is good in 1v1 situations. She has elite recovery speed. And she is not afraid to put in a challenge when needed. She likes to compete and is coachable. She offers plenty in the attack as well. She can get forward and serves in a good delivery from the wide areas. She is good with both feet, which suggests a bright future at left back as she has the ability to cut inside as well as take a player to the end line. Maya Bravo, also on the 05 team, is another 2023 player to watch. Bravo is an attacking midfielder who offers creativity in the attack. Ava Marvin, on the 03/04 TSJ side, is also one to watch. She was part of the team that finished as a national runner-up in the U17 age group last season. The attacking midfielder/forward is clever on the ball and can break down the opposition. She is another top uncommitted 2023 from TSJ FC Virginia club. TSJ FC Virginia 05 takes on City SC on Thursday. TSJ FC Virginia 04 faces South Shore Select in the Round of 16 game.
Nadia Zaffanella – Oakwood Soccer Club 05 – 2023 – Highlights
Zaffanella is another defensive midfielder from the class of 2023 who is worth a look. She is the captain of her side in the Girls Academy. Oakwood enters the event as one of the favorites. The team has been very successful in the U17 age group including a dominant performance against Tophat in California in December. Zaffanella standouts out on the field because she is demonstrative to her teammates. She understands the game at a high level and has been a key piece to her side’s success. She is tough on the tackle and uses her lower body to knock players off the ball cleanly in the center of the field. On the ball, she is a good distributor with capability to hit long range passes accurately. Oakwood opens up against Lamorinda SC in the game on Thursday.
Remy Baskind – Colorado Rush 05 – 2023
The midfielder for Colorado Rush is one to watch for Division I programs. She is a good athlete combined with a great soccer player. She can play as a No. 6 or a No. 8. She is an excellent passer and has a good first touch. She has all the tools to be a good midfielder at the next level. Rush center back Sidney Weigh is another one to watch on this team. Colorado Rush takes on Tophat Gold.
Chloe Deters – IMG Academy 05 – 2023
Deters is a two-year starter for the IMG Academy GA 05 squad. She was selected to the 2022 GA Southeast Talent ID event. The 2023 recruit likes to fly up and down the touchline for her spot at outside back. She is capable with both feet so fit in either at right or left back at the next level. Taylor Vogt, Taylor Howard, Sophia Weiss, Madison Huanino, Anna Wyatt, and Campbell Granack are also 2023 recruits to watch from the IMG Academy 05 side. Croatia National Team goalkeeper Savannah Sabo is a standout on the IMG Academy 04 side and one of the top uncommitted 2023 goalkeepers at the event. Kate Cox, a four-year starter at defense and midfield, is another 2023 recruit to keep an eye on for the IMG Elite 03/04 squad.
