Deer Park Deer
The Lady Deer from the Deer Park High School are part of UIL’s Division 6A – Region 3, District 22. They have been a perennial playoff team in the region and have gone as far as the State Tournament Championship Match back in 2006-2007. Deer Park have some good depth in their roster and seem poised for another good campaign this season.
Players to Watch
Kamryn Shamblin
Kamryn Shamblin
Shamblin has been working between the post for Deer Park this season. She has good size and has been very reliable with her actions, almost never offering second-chance opportunities for opponents. Shamblin is a very complete goalkeeper as she’s solid in leaving the goal to stop opponents in transition but also does very well when collecting crosses inside the penalty box. Her background as field player also gives her good ability with her feet, which she uses well when needed.
Abigail Scott
Abigail Scott
A senior, Scott anchors Deer Park’s defensive system extremely well. She’s very strong in the air and is a versatile center back, who can use her athleticism to stop plays through the middle or her pace to chase attackers near the sidelines. Scott is normally very calm on the ball and frequently connects good passes from the back. She has a lot of power on her right foot and is the team’s main free kick taker, scoring from distance and sending dangerous crosses into the penalty box.
Natalie Powell
Natalie Powell
Powell does a lot of Deer Park’s heavy work in midfield and sets the tone for the team with her high intensity. She’s always on the move and covers a lot of ground in the middle, helping the Deer regain possession several times every match. Powell is one of those players who never give on winning the ball back and will keep trying to tackle opponents until she finally succeeds. She also has a good presence on the offensive side of the game, looking to combine with teammates and making some smart runs off the ball.
Amy Romero
Amy Romero
A transfer from Sam Rayburn High School, Romero has provided an interesting offensive spark for Deer Park. A lefty, she is the team’s offensive centerpiece and has tactical freedom to move around the attacking third looking for the best spot to get on the ball. She’s very intelligent and often looks to combine with her teammates, but is also dangerous when she attempts to make solo runs. Another great thing about Romero’s game is her excellent ball control, which allows her to get on the end of difficult passes and still make something out of it.
Sonya Hughes
Sonya Hughes
Hughes works very hard on the field and has good versatility, being capable of playing as a forward or dropping deeper to be a part of Deer Park’s midfield. She’s very aggressive on the ball and can help the teams in a variety of ways. Hughes is very good at coming from the midfield area and making runs off the ball into the penalty box, but can also get the ball with her back to the goal and find good passes. She’s also dangerous with her mid-range shots and is not afraid to take them.
