Continue ReadingJSerra Catholic, regarded as perhaps the top team in the Country this winter season, easily earns the No. 1 spot in the PrepSoccer California State rankings. The Lions pulled off the treble, winning the difficult Trinity League, running through the Southern Section’s Division I and then almost without much of a scare, won the SoCal Regional title.
Teams 1-10
We travel north for the No. 2 team with Davis claiming that spot. In any other year, Davis may have been the No. 1 team in the State but for the might of JSerra. Clovis North, also an excellent team, finishes No. 3. We move down to the LA City Section with Birmingham, the runners up in SoCal, coming in at No. 4. The next four spots go to Southern Section semifinalists and quarterfinalists with Mountain View breaking the run, coming in at No. 9. Orange Lutheran, easily the smallest school in this group, comes in at No. 10. The OLu turnaround is incredible.
Teams 11-20
San Diego Section Division I champ St. Augustine and the runners up, San Dieguito Academy, are at No. 11 and No. 12. Monte Vista, the North Coast Section DI champ, is No. 13. Bellarmine Prep ends the season on quite the tear and ends up No. 15. San Pasqual, a San Diego Section semifinalist and SoCal DII champ is at No. 16 and Rio Americano, which lost in PK’s to Bellarmine in the DII NorCal final, is at No. 17. Whitney, the Sac-Joaquin Section DI runners up and NorCal quarterfinalist, is at No. 18
Teams 21-30
Terra Linda is the big story in this grouping. The Trojans had lost four out of six matches in late January and early February, then went on to win 10 matches in a row, including a Marin County Athletic League tournament title, an NCS DIII crown and then the NorCal DII title. Marin Academy, which lost to Terra Linda in the NCS final, is at No. 28 with Inderkum at No. 29.
Teams 31-40
Archbishop Mitty kicks off this group at No. 31, followed by an Oak Park team, getting respect despite losing in the first round of the Southern Section Division I final. The Eagles were likely under-seeded and nearly beat Sunny Hills in the first round, a team that made the title match and finished ranked No. 5. Traditional powers Servite and Cathedral are in this batch, having great seasons, but likely feeling disappointed after early playoff exits. El Camino Real, another solid team from the LA City Section, is at No. 34.
Teams 41-50
Three more Southern Section teams make the first five of this group, but we also see the lone representative of the Northern Section as Chico is ranked No. 44. Vintage was an NCS finalist and is ranked No. 49 while Clayton Valley, the team ranked No. 1 in the NCS and that Vintage upset to make the final, is No. 50.
