The 2023 postseason has produced some great action filled with excitement, drama, and the inevitable heartbreak. The regional round is full of marquee matchups. On the Girl’s side, district rivals Prosper and McKinney Boyd faced each other for the third time this season. Their regular season games were very close with a 1-1 draw and a 1-0 McKinney win, which set the stage for an electric third round matchup. This article will have a recap of the match as well as a photo gallery.
On a windy Thursday night in North Texas, the two 12-2-2 district 5 rivals battled it out for the third time this season in a very close, physical, and intense match. Prosper got off to a good start in the first half where they dominated possession, dictated the tempo, and created quality chances- two of which were denied by the woodwork. With less than a minute until the half, McKinney Boyd’s star striker, Lauren Omholt Lauren Omholt D McKinney Boyd (TX) | 2023 State #169 Nation TX showed her individual brilliance with a beautiful bending strike from outside the box that found its way into the top corner and put the Broncos up 1-0 with only seconds left in the half.
The Broncos were going into the second half against the wind, which is no easy task considering the offensive weapons Prosper has with the likes of Emma Yolinsky Emma Yolinsky F Prosper (TX) | 2024 State #7 Nation TX , Brooklyn Miller Brooklyn Miller null | M Prosper (TX) | 2024 State #198 Nation TX , Samantha Cortez Samantha Cortez M Prosper (TX) | 2023 TX , and Olivia Hess Olivia Hess 5'6" | M Prosper | 2025 State TX to name a few. Prosper came out swinging in the second half; pressuring Boyd’s defense and testing the goal keeper.
Emma Yolinsky Emma Yolinsky F Prosper (TX) | 2024 State #7 Nation TX is one of the best attacking minded players in the state, and she was the most difficult player for the Broncos to keep quiet. She created quality chances both for herself and her teammates which we know she can do, but her determination, leadership, and heart she played with was admirable. If almost any other keeper was in goal then Emma would have at least scored a brace.
The story of the second half revolved around the heroics of McKinney’s Sophomore Goal Keeper, Shelby Henderson Shelby Henderson null | GK McKinney Boyd | 2025 State TX . Shelby was a monster all night between the sticks. She made save after save to deny Prosper an equalizer, and in the second half alone had at least seven saves. Despite Prosper’s attackers peppering her goal all evening, Henderson had one of those games where she looked unbeatable. In one sequence, Shelby made an incredible save on a shot that was headed for the side net by getting just enough on it to put it outside her post. She showed how tough and fearless she is another time by saving on a close range strike with her face. Shelby was the nights man of the match. The Eagles of Prosper did not go down without a fight and kept pushing until the final whistle, but the Broncos held strong and earned their spot in the regional semi finals with a 1-0 win.
I asked McKinney Boyd’s first year head coach Elias Ramos about how he prepared his side to take on such a talented opponent that they were familiar with. Ramos said that they had only one day of rest to prepare, and went into the match with a game plan similar to their previous meetings, but that he did make a number of tactical and positional adjustments at the half. The adjustments coach Ramos made was a crucial part of the Broncos victory. Boyd has developed into a disciplined side who look like they have bought into the program and play with passion. The Broncos will be facing the winner of Permian Basin and South Lake Carroll in the regional quarter finals.
