Region 3A
#1 seed Lafayette Rams (14-2-2) no. 10 in the 757: The defending VHSL class 3 state champions have not missed a beat this year while looking to defend their title and look for a third straight trip to the state tournament. The only blemishes on their resume are a draw against no. 15 Tabb, a draw and a loss to no. 9 Jamestown, and loss to no. 8 Smithfield. 10 clean sheets prove that the Rams cannot only score but defend as well behind the play of junior keeper Eva Fields, senior keeper Charity Egbo, senior defender Jasmine Piggott, and sophomore defender Kira Moore. In the attacking end, sophomore forward Taylor Walker (19G/11A), sophomore midfielder Ceci Riggs (13G/8A), and junior forward Lexi King (13G/7A) lead a powerful and technical attack. Other key contributors are senior midfielder Sam Lynch, junior Eva Fields, and sophomore Maddie Lynch. The Rams easily took down Colonial Heights in the region quarterfinals.
#2 seed Tabb Tigers (10-4-2) no. 15: The Tigers have had some impressive results this year finishing fourth in the Bay Rivers district and qualifying for the end of season tournament where they lost to no. 9 Jamestown. They did however defeat Jamestown this season along with no. 20 Menchville, no 16 York, Poquoson and Bruton (both who have advanced to the region 2A final). Tabb is led by all-district selections senior midfielder Aubrey Case, sophomore Ava Beaulieu, senior Taylor Kaminer, and junior Sydney Brown. Tabb is just a win away from their first trip to states since 2019 and will be facing York whom they defeated 2-1 earlier this year. The Tigers had no problem with Phoebus in the opening round of regionals.
#3 seed York Falcons (11-5-1) no. 16: York brings an experienced roster to the tournament with nine seniors who were a part of the 2022 squad that qualified for states, which was the first trip to states for the Falcons since 2018. The Falcons had five losses on the season (all to ranked sides) and all but one of the losses were closely contested, so they are no stranger to big matches. Their roster includes 2023 all-district selections senior forward Audrey Atwell Audrey Atwell M York | 2023 VA , senior defender Naiya Holt Naiya Holt D York (VA) | 2023 VA , sophomore defender Alyssa Gomez, and senior keeper Ashley Hunt Ashley Hunt GK York (VA) | 2023 VA . A rematch with Tabb is all that stands in the way of a return to state tournament. The post season got off to a good start defeating Hopewell 5-0.
#4 see New Kent Trojans (9-7-1) not ranked: The Trojans posting a winning record for the first time in over five years and kept their hopes alive with a region quarterfinal win over Lakeland. New Kent now faces an uphill task of meeting Lafayette in the semifinals whom they lost to 6-0 in the regular season.
Region 2A
#2 seed Poquoson Islanders (7-8-2) not ranked: As a class 2 school, Poquoson faces an uphill battle every year playing in the Bay River district. They have only averaged eight wins over the past five seasons but have qualified for the class 2 state tournament every season since 2018 and advanced to the final in 2022 where they fell to Glenvar 2-1. Sydney McCarthy is the reigning class 2 player of the year and will look to lead her squad deep into the tournament. The Islanders will face Bruton in the region 2A final and have already qualified for the state tournament.
#4 seed Bruton Panthers (8-9-0) not ranked: Bruton has turned their program around since not winning a match in the 2021 campaign. Last year was monumental as the Panthers qualified for the state tournament where they fell in the quarterfinals. Building on that success, they have defeated Windsor and King William in the regional tournament and will now face Poquoson for a region championship with a bid for the VHSL class 2 tournament already secured.
Region 1A
#1 seed Northampton Yellowjackets (10-2-2) not ranked: An up-and-coming program, Northampton looks to return to the VHSL class 1 state tournament in 2023 after posting double digit wins in consecutive years. Forwards Jacqueline Santos and Edith Palacio, midfielders Ryan Jones and Lizeth Panuco, and defenders Abbigail Locklear and Bianca Garza were all first team all-district and look to carry the Yellowjackets through the post season. The Yellowjackets face Middlesex in the semifinals whom they defeated 9-4 in the regular season.
