Champions were crowned in each division and several players stood out with excellent performances throughout the week while Prep Soccer watched the action very closely.
I was in attendance during the first weekend of play and watched as many Round of 32 matches as I could, picking several players to highlight. With the tournament now over, it’s time we run that list down, starting with the U-15s. This time, we’ll take a look at some goalkeepers who left a strong impression:
Hunter Anderson
Hunter Anderson
Anderson’s play was critical in Seattle’s comeback victory over Orlando City. With his team pushing forward for the equalizer, the backline was more exposed than usual, allowing the Lions some good opportunities to increase their lead, all of which were denied by Anderson. He displayed a very solid and complete game between the posts, using his positioning to cut corners and his great reflexes and explosiveness to get to difficult shots. Anderson transmitted a great deal of confidence to his teammates and had impressive consistency for a player of his age.
Dane Johnstone
Dane Johnstone
Johnstone was really strong for LA Galaxy during the tournament, making good stops between the posts for them. A very tall goalkeeper, he uses his size very well to control the penalty box in the air and is really hard to score from a close distance because of how much area he can cover with his long arms. Despite his size, he’s very quick with his movement and makes some excellent judgment calls on when to leave his mark or stay between the posts. Johnstone also displayed goog quality and calm on the ball when he had to use his feet.
Zochowski was the hero of Columbus Crew’s victory over the New England Revolution in the penalty kicks by making a save and scoring himself the team’s game-winning goal. Before that, however, he had already displayed some interesting quality between the posts with big-time plays and great communication with his backline. The goalkeeper is not very tall, but is very agile and makes some really good moves between the posts. His positioning is also a big part of his success as Zochowski thrived by being on the right place at the right time on some occasions.
Although he couldn’t stop Seattle’s comeback, Maxim kept Orlando City in the game with some big saves when the teams met. A goalkeeper with excellent physical and technical tools, he was very calm and confident every time he got on the ball and coordinated the team’s backline, delaying the Sounders’ comeback for as long as he could. Maxim uses his length extremely well to get to balls and to extend his range in 1v1 situations, making it very difficult for opposing attackers to beat him from short distance.
Kai Yandall
Kai Yandall
Yandall conceded three goals in Nashville’s loss to LAFC, but wasn’t at fault in any of them and made a good impression with his qualities. What stood out the most in his game was his ability to play with his feet. Nashville would very rarely use long balls from the back, instead going with a slow and methodical buildup and that very often involved their goalkeeper. Yandall was on the ball a lot and did a very good job with it, even when under pressure. He made very choices with his distribution and executed his passing very well.
