This season will be no different; from outstanding underdogs, to breathtaking champions. The Texas high school game has always been extremely entertaining but even at that level it is still rapidly improving. I would not be surprised to see the game grow even more intensely at the high school level as club ball continues to grow and the sport expands throughout the nation.
These programs are a must watch for anyone interested in the amateur game.
Frisco Lone Star
District Ranking: 1st
State Ranking: 2nd
National Ranking: 8th
22/23 Record: 24-1-2 (0.93 Win %)
Predicted 23/24 Record: 21-2-4
Frisco Lone Star is one of the most outstanding and consistent programs in the entire nation, let alone the state of Texas. This is a team that has been blessed with success, even winning the 2022-23 5A State Championship.
Given that Lone Star is a member of the same Frisco ISD that has transformed their soccer programs with help from FC Dallas’ outstanding youth program, there will always be large amount of talent flowing through the ranks. FC Dallas has absolutely helped Lone Star has maintain a constant influx of potential superstars and solidified talent.
Lone Star scored 95 goals during their 2022-23 campaign and in return only let in 19 goals, showing that they have great balance when it comes to their ability to attack or defend. This program has consistently showed that their overwhelming attack and staggering defense has stunted their opposition and given them the ability maintain their place as one of the best programs in the nation.
If you’re a college or lower level professional coach looking to boost your scoring ability, I’d say you should dedicate some of your winter to the games Frisco Lone Star plays in. You’re sure to find players that are game ready.
Player to watch: Tucker Eason
Tucker Eason
Tucker Eason
Eason was able to score 21 goals in 27 games for alone Star, adding 11 assist to cap off an amazing season. This shows Eason’s nose for goal and should show any college scout just how calm Eason can be under pressure. Eason was a sophomore in 2022-23, meaning he has plenty left to give for the Rangers moving forward and proving he is something special for Lone Star’s program.
Frisco Reedy
District Ranking: 3rd
State Ranking: 30th
National Ranking: 134th
22/23 Record: 17-5-4 (0.73 Win %)
Predicted 23/24 Record: 20-3-3
Reedy is an extremely solid team and although they finished 3rd in their district last season, I wouldn’t be surprised if they ended up one of the best squads in the region this year.
Reedy is one of those programs that doesn’t have a lot of national attention but still produces players that should be showcased at the national level. Ranked at 134th in the nation, they aren’t much to look at on paper. However, I’ve included them over some schools that are ranked higher nationally because they scored an absurd 76 goals against some really good teams.
I believe with a little polishing and a good offseason that this program has a chance at winning its district and upsetting the defending 5A State Champion, Frisco Lone Star.
Player to watch: Brady Baxter
Brady Baxter
Brady Baxter
This young forward played just three games his sophomore season and finished these games with a goal and 2 assist. While this stat line isn’t overly impressive, it shows that Baxter has the ability to make an impact at a more competitive level. The word around the area is that Baxter has a bright future and isn’t afraid of the expectation ahead of him. I believe he’ll be able to take that positive goal/assist to game ratio and run with it. He’s definitely someone to keep an eye out for.
Ennis High School
District Ranking: 1st
State Ranking: 80th
National Ranking: 328
22/23 Record: 18-4-2 (0.79 Win %)
Predicted 23/24 Record: 20-3-2
Ennis is one of those programs that came out of no where into the limelight. In an environment that is dominated by the flair of Texas football, the true football has begun to stake its turf.
After a season in which their program netted 82 goals, they’re on a hot streak going into this upcoming season. Ennis was able to beat teams decisively over and over again, yet I feel that they only have room to grow. I think given time and positive support within their community, this program can be a true State Championship competitor for years to come.
If you’re a coach looking to watch some exciting football and witness a program that’s truly coming into its own, I’d say getting to a Ennis district match would be great for you and your program.
Player to watch: Regan Trojacek
Regan Trojacek
Regan Trojacek
Trojacek scored an outstanding 39 goals last season and somehow had enough time to add 20 assist to his tally on the year. When you put it into perspective, having contributed on 59 of his teams 82 goals, Trojacek is absolutely one of the most exciting seniors to watch this season. I’m not sure if he will be able to match his previous tally but even coming close would give him legendary status in the amateur game.
