The East has won five straight meetings, and if not for a last-minute goal by Josie Studley of the West — would have posted a fourth straight 3+ goal victory.
After a scoreless first half, Hudson put the East on the board in the 48th minute, finishing a play that a long punt by East keeper Serayah Leech started. Just five minutes later, Hudson, who earned East MVP honors, scored again, this time taking a pass from Winn and pushing the ball to her right to clear space before sending a perfectly placed shot in the lower right corner for a 2-0 cushion. Winn capped the East scoring in the 63rd minute after accepting a pass from Hudson and then launching a shot from distance that dipped just under the crossbar.
Studley, who is committed to Dayton, delivered a strong left-footed shot from distance that Leech couldn’t reach, giving the West its only goal and it came in the 90th minute.
Midfielder Maddie Padelski was named MVP for the West squad.
Below are the Best XI, as nominated by the coaches:
GOALKEEPER
Cheeseboro was quite literally a last-minute addition to the starting lineup. The standout from Good Counsel (Md.) and a Boston College commit, she was selected for the All-America Game yet was too ill to travel to the venue Thursday and Friday. She showed up Saturday morning, little more than an hour before the match and delivered a sensational shutout half in goal. Cheeseboro was effective in coming off her line to thwart West attacks and she showed a great range of shot-stopping plays, including a low diving save to her left that denied what appeared to be a sure goal.
DEFENDERS
The North Carolina commit from Buckingham Browne & Nichols School (Mass.) was the top defender on the day. She was strong in 1v1 situations and she was very aggressive from the center back position. Her speed and athleticism came into play when she hustled past a West attacking player and cleared a ball while facing the goal, preventing the West from scoring.
Magnotta’s ability to read plays made her a dominating force on the backline. In fact, the East team played three in the back against a West team that featured four players with 100+ career goals. It didn’t seem to matter. The East shut down every attack, only conceding a goal in the final minute of play in a 3-1 victory. Magnotta, who is heading to Penn State, was effective in stepping in front of West players to break up the play. She starred at Episcopal Academy (Pa.), which has put players in this All-America Game the past two seasons.
The Michigan State commit from Freehold Township (N.J.) played as an outside back and was a great 1v1 defender. She also has attacking skills and was able to get up on offense when the opportunity presented itself.
MIDFIELDERS
Collins played a little defense and on the wing, but she was effective in every role in which she was placed. The South Carolina-bound player from Pope John Paul II (Tenn.) was blazing fast and very composed on the ball.
The Alabama commit from Nolensville (Tenn.) was confident on the ball and very good at changing pace. She was confident in every aspect of her game. Padelski is a junior but is graduating a year early to start her college career, which made her eligible for this senior-only contest.
The Washington commit from Faith Lutheran (Nev.) was very poised on the ball and clearly has a high soccer IQ. She was very smooth and a true No. 6 in the field.
Shumate was really effective on the wing with great runs and a very good first touch. She filled in as a No. 9 when Hudson got forward and it made for a dynamic attack. The Downingtown East (Pa.) product is bound for Villanova.
FORWARDS
Hudson was the star of the game, scoring the first two goals for the East and having a foot in the third goal of the 3-1 victory. Tall, strong, and athletic, this Florida State commit was named the East MVP and there wasn’t any question. She was able to stretch the field and get in behind defenders.
Winn played the first half out of position but in the second half, she was a difference maker. The UCLA-bound attacking player assisted one of Wrianna Hudson’s goals and then scored her goal on a perfectly placed shot that dipped just under the crossbar. Winn applied a lot of offensive pressure that resulted in several East chances.
While the West lineup featured a number of 100-goal high school soccers, it was the East team that swept the Best XI forwards. Bradley played on the wing and showed great size, speed and athleticism. Her best moment was a time she spun to split a double team and create a scoring chance. The Wayne Hills (N.J.) senior is committed to Virginia.
