In the first round of playoffs, we saw the 4th place team from one district goes up against the 1st place team from another district. While there can be some fairly one-sided first round games, records mean nothing once the post season starts; and there are always some great 1st round matchups. This article will recap the girls 6A playoff match between McKinney Boyd and Flower Mound and includes a photo gallery from the action earlier this week.
Flower Mound has been one of the top ranked teams in Texas all year and ran through their district with an 11-1-2 first place finish. While Boyd had sort of a down year by their standards and finished district at 7-7, this was still strong enough to get the 4th spot in their district and a post season spot in playoffs. On paper, Flower Mound were the heavy favorites going into the game, but Boyd is a well-coached team who is capable of pulling off the upset. Boyd gave Flower Mound a real game that was closer than the box score would tell you.
Flower Mound have a pair of bona fide play-making attackers who have been an immense factor in the Jaguars success this year. The two juniors, Bella Larson and Jaylen Chaney, are tall, strong, talented, and athletic players that have found a way to continuously find the back of the net. Jaylen struck early against Boyd and put her side up 1-0. Not long afterwards, Bella’s great finish increased the lead for Flower Mound to 2-0.
Just when things could’ve gotten out of hand, one of Boyd’s star defenders, Meg Welsh cut the lead in half by slotting home a 1v1 goal to give her Broncos hope going into the half. Meg played most of the match as a forward, and how well she did out of her natural defensive position showed a lot of versatility. After Boyd’s goal reenergized them, the momentum was swinging their way at halftime, but Bella Larson made sure it didn’t last long and she netted her 2nd goal not even 1 minute into the half. Boyd refused to quit, and showed a lot of heart with the way they kept fighting. Boyd clawed one back to make it 3-2 after a top-class strike from junior forward, Ashleigh Peffers. Shortly after the Broncos made it a one score game, in stepped Jaylen Chaney who bagged her brace and put the game to bed with a clutch goal 4-2. Another performance to mention was that of Boyd’s Goal-keeper, Shelby Henderson Shelby Henderson null | GK McKinney Boyd | 2025 State TX . She made several big time saves that kept the score close and allowed her team to stay in the game.
