With temperatures rising and the call of glory beckoning, the 2008 ECNL Boys took the field looking to survive and advance. Let's take a look at who stood out in the matches we saw:

NCFC Academy B08 3 - 1 Beach FC (CA) - Fireworks were expected for this contest, and it surely delivered. End to end action for 90 minutes, with plenty of shots, saves, and all the intensity of a knockout stage match.

Stewart pushed the pace for NCFC and provided the squad with a much needed boost every time the match felt like it might tilt in favor of their opponent. After battling for nearly 45 minutes, Stewart found the opener for his side, making the most of a gifted chance. He continued as the engine for his side in the second half, providing the key pass before their second goal, and winning possession that would earn them their third goal and put the match out of reach.

Ellis stood on his head repeatedly throughout this matchup, preserving the hope that NCFC had of getting back into the game, and once they evened things up, he took it one step further to see NCFC advance. The first half saw him make two huge stops on prime shooting chances, followed shortly with a clearance of a misplayed long ball that was inches away from being nabbed and slotted home by the onrushing attacker. In the second half, he showed his range and dexterity, pushing a save over the bar and claiming another low as NCFC looked to extend the lead. Finally, with the game all but secure, his time management and distribution ensured the danger was past and his side were moving on.

Krueger had a spectacular second half as NCFC came from behind to win this matchup. His first contribution was a goal from a slipped ball from a teammate, with a deft touch ensuring that it found its' way into the opposition net. His second moment found him returning the favor, a well weighted pass that found his teammate who slammed home the third.

LAFC So Cal 4 - 1 Mustang SC - This game was firmly in Mustang SC's control until a howitzer of a shot just before halftime jump started LAFC's attack. Once the second half began, it was all the boys in white as they cruised in the second half to a victory and a semifinal berth.

With the game set back to all square coming out of halftime, Ghajar made the most of his chances. His two goals and assist in the second half were dreamlike for the victorious side, seeing them through to the semifinals from a match that they chased for most of the first half. His quickness getting to a loose ball and deft dribbling skill allowed him the time and space to dance around defenders (and the goalkeeper) as he bagged himself a brace and spurred his team on to the next round.

Rojas was all over the field, specifically in the second half as LAFC pushed to take the lead and put the game away. He excelled in cutting off passes and pushing the attack towards the opposition goal, and when they were able to break lines, Rojas was a thief in the night with his tackles, winning possession for his side multiple times and getting them out of danger. For as much work as the So Cal offense put in in the second half, their defense and Rojas were usually the catalyst.

The player that started the comeback, Hernandez was Johnny on the spot just before halftime. A rebounded corner that fell into his space, Hernandez put his boot through the ball from about 25 yards out and it flew into the upper 90, sending his teammates into a frenzy going into halftime.

Apolinar rounded out the scoring for So Cal, finally finishing off an attacking combination after several attempts previously. A deft turn and slot home past the goalkeeper afforded him the chance to celebrate. This fell on the back of his assist on the previous goal, a slick weighted pass into the path of his teammate that was guided home and truly sealed the deal with 5 minutes to go.

Turner put Mustang SC ahead early in the match, and it seemed that his goal was going to stand firm. While it didn't hold up on its' own, the take was fantastic, a finish fresh off of a deflected corner down in the corner past three bodies. It was a quality finish that would raise eyebrows for many, especially for a defender.
