The high school soccer season continues to progress at full pace in the state of Texas and this past weekend was a busy one, with many tournaments taking place across the Lone Star State as teams prepare for the start of district play.

One of them was the I-10 Shootout, a traditional event held in the Katy region, which this year reunited 64 varsity teams from the Houston area and beyond for three days of action between Thursday and Sunday. Prep Soccer Texas followed the action closely, watching five matches in the first two days of the event.

I-10 Shootout Photos:

Foster vs. Dawson

Cy Woods vs. Kingwood

Summer Creek vs. Langham Creek

Atascocita vs. Friendswood

Clements vs. Shadow Creek

We witnessed some really solid performances in each of these duels and are taking the week to feature the players who left a strong impression, this time focusing on the center backs:

Despite the negative result, Rivas had a solid showing when her team Forster lost to Dawson 3-0 in the first round of the Cougar Bracket. Originally a midfielder, she was moved to the backline this season and formed a strong center back duo Kaleigh Lazenby. Rivas was very active at protecting the penalty box, getting several tackles and interceptions, and, with her team trailing, her mobility was extremely important as she had to defend in space and cover her teammates. Rivas was also very comfortable on the ball, hitting nice passes from the backline and even making some strong runs through the middle and helping her team get the ball to the attacking half.

Foster vs. Dawson

Parkinson anchored Dawson's backline in their Cougar Bracket first-round match against Foster and led her team to a 3-0 victory. One of the team's captains, she played as a left-sided center back and displayed great quality, using her positioning to make stops. Parkinson was strong defending the penalty box and also did a good job when she was dragged further up in the field. She was very calm and efficient on the ball, helping her team progress it on the field and playing a major role in breaking Foster's pressure with quick, one-time passes.

Foster vs. Dawson

Abdmoulaie was flawless when Kingwood came back to defeat Cy Woods 3-2 in the first round of the Cougar Bracket. Playing on the left side of the team's back three, she was rock-solid and fully controlled her area, playing with authority and an imposing attitude and getting on the winning side of most 1v1 duels. A lefty, Abdmoulaie had the most freedom among the three center backs to support the attack and she did it very efficiently, starting the play that resulted in the team's game-winning goal with a beautiful lofted pass. With Kingwood playing with a man down for most of the second half, her solid play was instrumental as the team worked to preserve its lead.

Cy Woods vs. Kingwood

With a solid performance, Delgado helped Atascocita overcome the second round of the Falcon Bracket with a 3-1 win over Friendswood. Forming the team's center back duo with her younger sister Rian, the senior was very strong, controlling the area around the penalty box and covering her teammates when needed. The two did a good job of limiting Friendswood's dangerous forward Gisele Kehres, forcing her to play far from the penalty box for most of the time. A lefty, Delgado also displayed great quality in possession, hitting great passes and making pushes through the middle to support the team's offense.

Atascocita vs. Friendswood

Ajiboye had a solid shift with Shadow Creek as her team came back to top Clements 2-1 in the Spartan Bracket Consolation round. The junior was paired with two different center backs throughout the match and displayed great chemistry with both of them. Ajiboye used her physical tools extremely well and had a strong presence both inside and outside the penalty box. She was very efficient making clearances and getting tackles near the goal and also did a solid job when she had to step up and make pressure on opponents around the midfield line.

Clements vs. Shadow Creek
