Sacred Heart Prep wins CCS Division 5 Championship

<!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>It was a beautiful day for a championship match at the sunken Del Mar Stadium in San Jose, CA. The Sacred Heart Prep Gators and the North Monterey County Condors would be battling for a D5 Championship.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The Gators came into this playoff match as the 103rd ranked team in CA, with an overall record of (10-7-3). They were the 1st place team in the West Bay - Foothill League with a record of (6-1-1) in league play. Although they conceded 21 goals up to this point, they have 8 clean sheets and a staunch defense to contend with. They advanced to the finals by beating 8th seed KIPP Navigate (14-2-0) by a score of 9-0 in the quarterfinals and beating #4 seed Notre Dame SJ (7-10-3) 2-0. The Gators are the #1 seed in this Division 5 tournament.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The North Monterey County Condors had an impressive overall record of (17-5-3) and were the 2nd place team in the PCAL - Mission League. They were ranked as the #2 seed in the tournament.&nbsp; They advanced by winning #7 Oak Grove (13-1-3), and then they beat #3 seed Rancho San Juan (9-8-3) by a score of 2-1 in the semifinals. The Condors are the #2 seed in the tournament.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>It didn't take long for the Gators to get their first score on the board. The Sacred Heart Prep team actually scored the first 4 of their 7 total goals in the opening 9 minutes of the match. After the scoring barrage, the Condors seem to settle down and make some quality runs on goal. The Gators played a shutdown style of defense and limited the Condors attack in the first half. Left back [player_tooltip player_id='262616' first='Aris' last='Yu'] was brilliant on defense. She made clean tackles and made smooth passes when transitioning to offense. She can hold the ball for possession and make quick and precise passes. [player_tooltip player_id='289441' first='Averie' last='Sui'] played up top as a forward and created scoring opportunities when delivering quality passes to diagonal and overlapping runners. She seemed to always find the open spaces and make good decisions when passing the ball.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Other Gators standouts were Brook Amirkhan, Nathalia Herrera, Elie Shen, and [player_tooltip player_id='83596' first='Lewa' last='White']. Herrera, Shen, and White scored goals #5, #6, and #7. They all contributed by making quality passing combinations and by finding open players running through lanes and up and down the channels. The halftime score was 5-0 Gators.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>In the second half, the Condors started to make some good runs into the box. Their midfielders seemed to have found the open spots in the defense and stepped up their attack. The standouts from the Condors side were Anahi Flores, Tatiana Hernandez, Melissa Villa, Arianna Jiminez, and Isabella Hernandez. If there is anything as a moral victory, the Condors held the Gators to only 2 goals in the second half.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Overall, the Sacred Heart Prep team coasted through this tournament. Would definitely be interesting playing at a higher level in the NorCals. I firmly believe that their skill sets, great ball movement, and team chemistry will help them in the state tournament.
