If there was ever a team to rise above all challenges, it would be the Viewpoint Patriots. Some of the injuries the team sustained would be considered devastating, but their will to return to give their team hope is nothing short of heroic. One of the injuries involved the leading goal scorer, Charlotte Young, who suffered a concussion and was out a couple of games. [player_tooltip player_id='20138' first='Samantha' last='Marella'], one of the team captains, tore a calf muscle and was out 3 weeks of the season. Their goalkeeper also suffered a concussion and was out for the rest of the season and through playoffs. Luckily, Romy Harari (who doesn't play as a goalkeeper) came in and did an amazing job through our entire playoff run.

One of the largest obstacles to overcome was when their journey started during the Palisades Fire. The ravaging fires affected their conference by cutting their season in half. The majority of the schools were evacuated, and unfortunately, many lost their homes. Rather than having a 12-game season, it was cut down to a 6-game season. Although this community has suffered a lot from the fires, sports and camaraderie can bring people together and make the situation more bearable and sometimes unite people as one.

One of the questions I asked Samatha Marella was what are some of the interesting facts/challenges faced throughout the season. “We also made it into the playoffs as the "wild card, so the fact that we were the division champs truly shows the grit and determination our team has. We were able to fight through the adversity together.“ They overcame unlikely odds to win the CIF SS Division 5 Title. The school's last and only other CIF SS Championship was in 2017, thus making this the 2nd time in program history.

Some of the key players for the Patriots are Sam Marella, Charlotte Young, Misahra Briscoe, [player_tooltip player_id='19693' first='Kaylee' last='Foxhoven'], and Sara Wynn. Marella was one of the three captains on the team. She is the only player on the team committed to a D1 college (University of Miami). Sam plays center back for her club team, [program_tooltip program_id='278037' first='Legends' last='FC ECNL'] 07, but played midfield and center back for Viewpoint. When she came back after a calf injury, she stayed at center back for the remainder of the playoffs. Her return to the team definitely helped the Patriots win their second championship. Marella is also the third leading scorer on the team and sometimes moves into the midfield to make a push on offense.

https://twitter.com/BayAreaSocScout/status/1898292284300689917

Sophomore Charlotte Young was the leading goal scorer (13 goals on the season). She is really strong on the offensive side. She was one of the players the team relied on in the attacking third to finish. She's very strong and can push defenders off with her strength and power. She scored in every game except for one match. Another sophomore making an impact is Misahra Briscoe. She also had 13 goals on the season. She provides strength to the offense and is not afraid to make hard tackles when needed. Briscoe brings a lot of energy to the front line. She's never afraid of attacking the goal and gives a lot of effort every time she has the ball at her feet.

https://twitter.com/BayAreaSocScout/status/1898296845094498512

https://twitter.com/BayAreaSocScout/status/1898295776666697835

Another senior captain, [player_tooltip player_id='19693' first='Kaylee' last='Foxhoven'], has been a key player in the midfield throughout the season. She is very strong at working defensively as well as distributing balls to our attackers. Foxhoven recorded 11 assists and 3 goals. The third senior captain, Sara Wynn, played in the center back position. She is a great leader on and off the field. Wynn isn't afraid to make tackles in the backline. She is always keeping our team motivated.

https://twitter.com/BayAreaSocScout/status/1898294022017532170

https://twitter.com/BayAreaSocScout/status/1898276907537584569

Last, but not least, a lot of the success can be credited to Coach Zaira Fonesca, who has made a huge impact on their team this year. “She was actually our coach in middle school and has come full circle as the head coach for our final season. We really would have made this run Championship without her motivation and encouragement,” said Marella. This epic journey wouldn't have been possible without the support of the school, families, coaches, and supporters of this resilient community.

Another sophomore making an impact is Misahra Briscoe. She also had 13 goals on the season. She provides strength to the offensive and is not afraid to make hard tackles when needed. Briscoe brings a lot of energy to the front line.
