After a quick break for the Christmas celebrations, the high school soccer season is back in action in the state of Texas, and every day multiple matches are held in the Lone Star State as teams prepare for the start of district play in January.

For another season, Prep Soccer Texas will be following the action closely as it unfolds in the Houston area, attending multiple matches a week and providing the best coverage in the state, with Photo Galleries, Match Reports and Social Media posts that will help increase the exposure of teams and players in the Lone Star State.

On Monday, December 29, we attended the first match of perennial contenders and two-time state champions, the Seven Lakes Spartans, who hosted the Dekaney Spartans in Katy. Dominant from the starting whistle, the Spartans kicked off their 2025-2026 campaign with an 8-0 victory.

Seven Lakes vs. Dekaney - Photos

https://www.instagram.com/p/DS5RT83DqsP/?img_index=1

The Spartans scored most of their goals in the first half, with senior midfielder [player_tooltip player_id='90419' first='Anthony' last='Sorto'] getting a brace and senior forward Josh Taylor, senior midfielder David Aguillon and junior forwards [player_tooltip player_id='338116' first='Kanishk' last='Baviskar'] and Alex Onofrei adding one goal each. Senior defender/midfielder Carlos Saggiomo got his goal in the second, while Taylor registered his second, determining the final score.

Players of the Match

The senior midfielder was easily the most impactful player on the field, scoring twice and getting a pair of assists as the Spartans built their comfortable victory. Sorto played mostly on the left of the team's midfield, taking defenders off the dribble in 1v1 plays and also combining well with his teammates. Sorto also did a good job of coming inside to make plays and demonstrated great vision to find final passes and fire shots around the penalty box. She did very well in both of his goals, sending the ball outside of Dekaney's goalkeeper's reach, and got an assist after a beautiful play down the left and another one with a penalty cross using the outside of his foot.

The senior forward also scored two goals and was constantly involved in the team's attacking plays. Taylor spent most of the match playing more centrally and stood out with his ability to make runs, like the one that resulted in his first goal, and to work with his back to the goal. He also played on the right side of the team's front line and consistently had opposing defenders under pressure with his high energy and his runs out wide. Taylor benefited from his great positioning inside the box to score the team's eighth and last goal with an easy tap-in.

Playing a central midfielder, the senior helped dictate the Spartans' rhythm in the game. Aguillon played in a double pivot with junior James Towsen, but had the freedom to move all over the field when the team had possession, and he made the most of it, popping up in different areas to get on the ball. Aguillon was a constant threat in the final third with his ability to connect passes and move off the ball, and scored his goal in a play in which he infiltrated the box. The midfielder worked well defensively, helping his team win duels in the center of the field, and also delivered efficiently in set pieces.

Playing the No. 10 role, the senior was a key piece in the Spartans' offensive system. Extremely mobile and intelligent on the ball, Gonzalez facilitated plays with his distribution and vision, helping his team find space in the final third. The midfielder connected very well with the players around him and drifted wide on some occasions to make plays on the wings. Gonzalez assisted Taylor with a timely through ball in the team's fifth goal and was also involved in the sixth, firing the shot that rebounded for Onofrei to score.

The senior came in during the match and had a very solid performance in central defense for the Spartans. Saggiomo did very well with his positioning, stepping up to stop Dekaney's offensive plays, and also improved the team's buildup with quality and calmness on the ball. One of the team's captains, he also acted as a vocal leader on the back, making sure everyone continued engaged despite the comfortable lead. He added to what was already a strong performance by scoring the team's fifth goal, appearing well in the back post and firing a powerful header into the back of the net.
