The high school soccer season got immediately back in action in the state of Texas after the New Year celebrations, and every day multiple matches are held in the Lone Star State as teams prepare for the start of district play later this week.

For another season, Prep Soccer Texas will be following the action closely as it unfolds in the Houston area, attending multiple matches a week and providing the best coverage in the state, with Photo Galleries, Match Reports and Social Media posts that will help increase the exposure of teams and players in the Lone Star State.

On Monday, January 5, we attended another non-district match on the boys' side, watching the duel between the Fulshear Chargers and the Katy Taylor Mustangs. With two goals scored in the final portion of the first half, the visiting Mustangs triumphed 2-0.

Fulshear vs. Taylor - Photos

https://www.instagram.com/p/DTJ-ZBKjqL_/?img_index=1

Taylor scored their first goal in the 32nd minute of the first half, when sophomore midfielder [player_tooltip player_id='190974' first='Francisco' last='Sanchez Moreno'] found Alfonso Blanco behind the backline and the junior forward chipped the ball over Fulshear's goalkeeper. Three minutes later, Blanco picked up the rebound of a shot from senior midfielder Jean Escalona that hit the crossbar and sent the ball into the back of the net.

Taylor had a great chance to score another one in the 38th minute of the second half, when the ball hit the hand of a Fulshear defender and a penalty kick was called, but senior goalkeeper Tillman Klesner dove to the right and stopped the shot of senior forward Jesus Campos.

Players of the Match

Besides scoring both of Taylor's goals in the match, Blanco was a constant threat to Fulshear, getting involved in numerous other attacking plays. The junior forward started the match playing more to the left of the Mustangs' attack and used his pace to run at defenders and make plays. Moved to the center, he was excellent at making runs behind the backline, to the point that every time Taylor recovered possession, his teammates would immediately look to feed him with a through ball. Blanco showed quality and composure to score the first goal with a well-weighted chip and was extremely well-positioned to convert the second.

The senior defender was a rock for Taylor and contributed to the team's clean sheet with a flawless performance on the right side of their back three. Reynoso was very efficient at winning duels and entirely dominated his zone, shutting opponents down. He was matched with Fulshear's dangerous winger [player_tooltip player_id='287448' first='Rodrigo' last='Troconis'] for most of the second half and kept his quiet, standing out for his positioning and firm defensive actions. Cepeda was very active defensively, covering a lot of ground in teh center of the field and stepping up to make effective defensive plays. He also did very well on the ball, distributing the game well and connecting the vast majority of his passes. Sauls used his excellent positioning to intercept passes in the defensive half and was also very successful at winning duels and stopping plays. The left-sided center back was always very calm and intelligent in possession, passing the ball very well and helping his team initiate attacking plays. Sauls also generated some goal-scoring opportunities for Taylor by getting the ball into the box with long throw-ins and long-distance free kicks.

Despite the two goals conceded, which he wasn't to blame for at all, the senior goalkeeper had a strong performance between the posts and was arguably Fulshear's best player on the field. Klesner was frequently called to action in the first half and was very dependable, making difficult saves without hesitation. He also did very well when coming out to claim or punch crosses and when he had to step up to get to passes behind the backline. Klesner capped off a strong performance with a nice penalty kick save in the last minutes of the match.

The junior forward was only on the field for part of the first half and in the final minutes of the second, but was probably Fulshear's most dangerous attacking player. Used as a right winger, Lawal made some strong runs down the line, combining solid pace and good ball control that had Taylor's backline under pressure. He also showed good vision and passing ability to drop deeper and attempt to connect passes behind the backline. Lawal also did a good job of supporting the team's defense, dropping back to help them fight for the ball and showing good energy to do it.
