6 LA Galaxy Academy U13/U14 Prospects With Serious Upside

Have you ever considered that Southern California might be the most prestigious region in youth soccer, both on the boys and girls side?   One thing that feels certain is this: when you combine the value of both markets, Southern California is one of the ripest regions in the country for soccer athletes. At the center of that landscape, [program_tooltip program_id='283671' first='LA' last='Galaxy'] continues to lead the way as one of the strongest development pipelines in American soccer.   From being the first MLS club to reach five MLS Cups, to recently sending players like [player_tooltip player_id='146447' first='Mathis' last='Albert'] to Borussia Dortmund and Ryan Hartley to Parma Calcio 1913 in Italy, the Galaxy academy continues to prove that it can develop players beyond the domestic level. That alone should tell you that this is one of the hottest places in the country to find talent early.   Another unique aspect of the Galaxy system is the structure surrounding the academy itself. Every player tied to the [program_tooltip program_id='283671' first='LA' last='Galaxy'] Academy either currently attends the club's online high school or eventually will, as it is part of the developmental pathway and expectations within the organization. It's another example of how serious the club is about creating a professional environment at young ages.   This article focuses on the [program_tooltip program_id='283671' first='LA' last='Galaxy'] U13 and U14 age groups. These ages are naturally under-recruited because of NCAA regulations, but from a freelance scouting and media perspective, that creates a unique opportunity. It gives us a chance to identify young players before the larger recruiting market catches on.   The expectation for many players who sign with [program_tooltip program_id='283671' first='LA' last='Galaxy'] Academy is to work toward a homegrown deal or eventually reach MLS. But in my opinion, some of these players have the tools to surpass even those expectations.   With that being said, let's set the scene.   The Galaxy U13 group looks far more loaded with high-upside names than the U14 group. Compared to how the 2012s looked last year as U13s, there does appear to be a drop-off in the current U14 group. Out of the Galaxy age groups I've watched, the 2012 class feels like one of the weaker ones. On the other hand, the U13 group has a chance to become a monumental development class for the club.    Right Back / Right Wing   Jaxon King is a prospect I've only recently become aware of, but he immediately stood out. He is a right defender who has also been getting reps at right wing, and that versatility makes him extremely intriguing.   He is a double-edged sword because of how dangerous his speed is. Defensively, he has the ability to shut down opposing attackers simply because he is disciplined with his eyes, athletic enough to recover, and physical enough to compete. He can catch up to almost anyone, and he already has enough size to handle contact.   The moment that really made me realize he was special came this past weekend. He delivered an unbelievable cross, perfectly placed for his teammate to finish off a volley. Up to that point, he had my attention like many other good players on the field. But that play showed me he had a real gift.   I can't speak too much on his full athletic background, but with that type of coordination, I would not be surprised if he played multiple sports growing up. He looks like a true athlete.   Jaxon previously played for LAFC SoCal, a club that has developed a strong reputation in Southern California. LAFC SoCal is often connected to future academy-level movement, especially around the younger age groups. Jaxon choosing [program_tooltip program_id='283671' first='LA' last='Galaxy'] Academy follows a similar path to players like Elijah Johnson, and it also reflects why Galaxy remains such a powerful force in Southern California development. He is very well-spoken on and off the pitch. Physically, he already has a huge frame, broad shoulders, and still looks like he is growing. Under the mentorship of Jonathyn Lomeli, Sean has continued to show why he should be taken seriously as a long-term Galaxy prospect.   In my opinion, Sean has the tools to eventually surpass the MLS developmental system and attract attention beyond the domestic level. Goalkeepers develop differently than midfielders, wingers, or defenders. It can take longer for keepers to get the type of attention they deserve, but Sean's long-term upside is obvious.   [program_tooltip program_id='283671' first='LA' last='Galaxy'] has shown a willingness to play elite prospects up in age groups. Ryan Hartley is a great example. He played up for a long time, helped the Galaxy U19s win MLS NEXT Cup, and eventually signed with Parma Calcio 1913 in Italy. Sean could follow a similar developmental path if he continues trending upward. Some players just have a natural knack for goal, and Dagmawi showed exactly that. He scored a hat trick against Albion SC, and even though the game became a blowout, he was one of the main reasons it got to that point.   At 5'11 already as a 2013, his frame immediately jumps out. As an archetype, you could call him a poacher, but his skill set is more diverse than that. His game is built around speed, strength, and killer instinct. He made things look easy this past weekend.   He previously played for Juventus Academy Los Angeles, so this may be one of the most competitive environments he has ever been in. But he has not skipped a beat. [program_tooltip program_id='283671' first='LA' last='Galaxy'] Academy is probably one of the premier U13 teams in the country, and Dagmawi is already starting as a forward. That alone speaks volumes about his ability and character.   In the video linked below, you can see his killer instinct even when the team was already up big. He refused to let up and continued punishing defenders for mistakes. That matters. There is no such thing as a player who only needs to step up in big games. At 5'2, he is not the tallest player, but in my opinion that actually makes his game even more attractive. It shows that he has already been forced to adapt, process the game quicker, and rely heavily on timing and intelligence.   He is a true holding midfielder, but he also shows serious box-to-box tendencies. There were so many moments where he kept the game simple, but he also showed the ability to play direct when needed.   Most notably, he had a great assist to Dagmawi Addis. Xavi feels like one of the most important pieces to this team's success. Every great team needs a holding midfielder who can go both ways, stay reliable in possession, and make the game easier for everyone around him.   Xavi previously played for TFA Pro Academy, another strong Southern California program that consistently feeds players into both LAFC and [program_tooltip program_id='283671' first='LA' last='Galaxy'] systems.   It is rare to find a willing holding midfielder who does not lose the ball and can still contribute offensively in a simple, efficient way. At 4'11, he may not physically overwhelm defenders yet, but his technical quality and instincts offensively continue to stand out. He plays with confidence and creativity in dangerous areas.   Last year, he was the star player for Irvine Strikers, where he helped carry the team to an MLS NEXT Cup final appearance. They eventually lost to Springfield out of Northern Virginia, but Jackson still had a strong cup and regular season.   This year, he has followed that up by becoming a key starter for [program_tooltip program_id='283671' first='LA' last='Galaxy']. What impressed me this past weekend was his offensive ability and the way he continues to grow within a more competitive environment.   Through reputation, knowledge of his training habits, and the experiences he has already had, I fully expect Jackson to stay with Galaxy long-term and continue creating tremendous upside value.   He also does extra training with former [program_tooltip program_id='283671' first='LA' last='Galaxy'] Academy coach Sam Al-Basaith. Coach Sam has a tremendous track record of developing players, especially in the attacking third. Recently, he has played more as a left winger, and I think that has been good for his development. It has forced him to improve his small-space skills, use his speed more aggressively, and learn how to attack defenders who are out of position.   Eventually, I do see him moving back to left back full-time and becoming very valuable there. Galaxy has a unique way of developing players. From watching how they convert young players into high-value, high-efficiency prospects by the U16 age group and beyond, Henry feels like the most promising field player in the current U14 group. But based on what I've seen personally, along with what I already knew previously, these players are displaying the most “now” value.   At these ages, nobody is a guaranteed professional. There are still years of development, growth, competition, and adversity ahead. But that is exactly why these evaluations matter. The earlier you can identify coordination, mentality, athletic tools, and decision-making, the easier it becomes to understand which players may have a chance to separate later.   Jaxon King looks like a true athlete with elite two-way upside. [player_tooltip player_id='335411' first='Sean' last='Fields'] has the frame and goalkeeper profile to eventually attract serious attention. Dagmawi Addis has a killer instinct in front of goal and rare physical tools for his age. Xavi Arroyo gives the team balance and control from midfield. Jackson Blaze has already proven he can produce in big environments despite his size. Henry Reynolds has the size and flank versatility that Galaxy can continue molding.   If you care about the future of Southern California soccer, this Galaxy group is worth paying attention to now.
