MLS NEXT CUP: Rising U15 Stars

<p>The U15 age group was by far the most exciting division for me to watch at MLS NEXT Cup. Not only was the level of play extremely high, but two of my favorite clubs in all of MLS NEXT this year sent their U15 programs all the way to the championship game.</p>   <p>As a Southern California-based scout and content creator, I was naturally rooting for [program_tooltip program_id='283295' first='City' last='SC'] throughout the tournament. I've spent a lot of time covering the club during the regular season, creating content around their players and getting familiar with the culture they've built. Watching them navigate their way through the bracket and earn a place in the final was exciting to see.</p>   <p>On the other side was a club that readers of my work have probably heard me mention before: Cedar Stars Academy. If you've kept up with my articles and progression as a scout, you'll know I've developed a great deal of respect for what Cedar Stars has built in New Jersey. Across the Atlantic Seaboard, I believe they are the premier non-MLS academy in the country. Year after year, they continue producing top-level talent while maintaining a standard of excellence throughout the organization.</p>   <p>What stands out most about Cedar Stars isn't just the quality of players they develop. It's the culture, professionalism, and consistency of the entire operation. Their administration, coaching staff, and leadership deserve tremendous credit for building a program that is not only highly competitive but also exceptionally well-branded and respected throughout youth soccer.</p>   <p>With both programs bringing different strengths and philosophies to the table, the U15 division delivered some of the most memorable moments of the entire event. These are the players who stood out to me the most throughout their journey to the final.</p>    <p>[player_tooltip player_id='378046' first='Dayson' last='Ocampo'] showed exemplary offensive IQ throughout the tournament. Early on, he had one of the most impressive performances of the Cup when he helped eliminate RSL Arizona in the Round of 8.</p>   <p>Dayson is a very unique archetype of player. He isn't the tallest, but that does not affect his ability to crash the box and seek out goals from crosses. In the clip below, he finishes off a cross from his teammate [player_tooltip player_id='378044' first='Matthew' last='Brusco'] to break open the scoring in that game.</p>   <p>His overwhelming attacking contribution eventually led to him receiving the Golden Boot for scoring the most goals at the Cup. In the first three games alone, he had already recorded seven goals, including a hat trick in one of the matches.</p>    <figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-instagram wp-block-embed-instagram"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper"> https://www.instagram.com/reel/DYz2RNENpGy/?igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ== </div></figure>    <p>[player_tooltip player_id='378043' first='Nico' last='Villanueva'] is a prospect I first became aware of while covering [program_tooltip program_id='283295' first='City' last='SC'] in Southern California during the regular season. At MLS NEXT Cup, there was one game where he really separated himself from his peers as a legitimate prospect.</p>   <p>In the semifinal, which [program_tooltip program_id='283295' first='City' last='SC'] went on to win 3-0 to advance to the MLS NEXT Cup Final, Nico had two goal contributions with one goal and one assist. He also had so many strong moments in that game that I was able to put together a full game tape for him, which I'll share below.</p>   <p>Within this clip, you'll see a display of physicality, speed, skill, crossing, and finishing ability. His finish was absolutely clinical, but my favorite moment was his perfectly placed cross to teammate Brenden Nguyen for the dagger goal.</p>   <p>[player_tooltip player_id='378043' first='Nico' last='Villanueva'] is a prospect I would start scouting more seriously and communicating with for either the top D1 level or the professional pathway. He has the tools necessary to contribute at any level, and I'm excited to see how continued growth and confidence take his game to the next level.</p>    <figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-instagram wp-block-embed-instagram"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper"> https://www.instagram.com/reel/DY8i1Jfz7sf/?igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ== </div></figure>    <p>Ryan Miller is a prospect who had not previously caught my eye, but he made one of the most remarkable plays I've ever seen from a young goalkeeper in a clutch scenario.</p>   <p>The championship game ended in a 1-0 win for Cedar Stars Academy over [program_tooltip program_id='283295' first='City' last='SC']. With about five minutes left, [program_tooltip program_id='283295' first='City' last='SC'] created what was probably their best-looking combination and opportunity to score. Instead, Ryan Miller completely stretched out and denied the chance, keeping his team in the lead.</p>   <p>Up to that point, [program_tooltip program_id='283295' first='City' last='SC'] had been patient in possession and was pushing for an equalizer. But after that save, it felt like the life was sucked out of them through exhaustion and disappointment after coming up short on such a massive opportunity.</p>   <p>For me, Ryan Miller was the most remarkable goalkeeper I'll remember from this tournament, and he is someone I'll keep in mind heading into the next MLS NEXT season.</p>    <figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-instagram wp-block-embed-instagram"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper"> https://www.instagram.com/reel/DY-bjyXhRam/?igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ== </div></figure>    <p>Brenden Nguyen is a player I had recognized before, but I did not anticipate putting him on my top list until the semifinal match. His two goals against IFA completely changed my perspective on what I thought he was capable of.</p>   <p>He had two of the most unbelievable finishes I've seen in a high-stakes youth match. One was a ridiculous long-range chip over the goalkeeper's head in transition. The second was an unbelievable first-time finish from Nico Villabuena's cross.</p>   <p>Both goals left my jaw dropped. I first became aware of Brusco at MLS NEXT Fest, where he was one of the major contributors to his team's success in qualifying for Generation adidas Cup.</p>   <p>He continued to provide value at MLS NEXT Cup. Early in Cedar Stars' Cup journey, he set up [player_tooltip player_id='378046' first='Dayson' last='Ocampo'] on a platter with an unbelievable cross. If there's one thing I'd use to describe Brusco's style of play, it's his killer mentality when he flies up the flank.</p>   <p>His speed is paired with a low center of gravity, great strength, and strong technical ability. Defenders are forced to play him tight and man-to-man, but he has the IQ to read how defenses are playing him and exploit the space depending on what is being given.</p>   <p>My favorite part about Brusco is that he is a true team player. You can see in the way he plays that he values assists just as much as goals. It is almost as if he finds more value in setting up his teammates by turning a good look into an even better one.</p>   <p>He is one of the central pieces to Cedar Stars' future in this age group. In my opinion, of everyone on this list, I think Brusco has all the tools necessary to make a push toward a first-team pathway and contract. One of the best parts about events like MLS NEXT Cup is that they provide players from every background and pathway an opportunity to showcase their ability in high-pressure scenarios against elite competition.</p>   <p>In particular, I was extremely impressed with how MLS NEXT hosted this tournament. From a scouting perspective, the format allowed players to separate themselves when the stakes were highest. From a content creation standpoint, it created countless storylines and moments worth documenting.</p>   <p>Most importantly, new names emerged. Some players entered the tournament with established reputations, while others used this stage to introduce themselves to a wider audience. That's what makes youth soccer so exciting—development isn't linear, and every event presents an opportunity for a player to take the next step in their journey.</p>   <p>While Cedar Stars Academy ultimately lifted the trophy, both Cedar Stars and [program_tooltip program_id='283295' first='City' last='SC'] showed why they are among the premier non-MLS programs in the country. The quality of play, individual talent, and competitive environment on display throughout the U15 division should leave scouts, coaches, and fans excited about what the future holds for this age group.</p>   <p>If MLS NEXT Cup taught me anything, it's that there are plenty more names still waiting to emerge. These were simply the players who left the strongest impression on me this week, and I look forward to following their development as the next MLS NEXT season approaches.</p>
