From ECNL Playoffs to U.S. U-16 Camp: California Standouts Shine

With 24 players called up for a training camp at the Arthur M. Blank U.S. Soccer National Training Center in Fayetteville, Ga., California's influence is hard to ignore. In fact, seven of the selected athletes hail from the Golden State, a testament to the state's consistently rising talent pool. As a result, California continues to produce prospects who are ready for the next level. As the July camp runs from July 24 through August 2, here's a closer look at the California players making their mark on the national stage.   The USA U-16s are set to face Concacaf rivals Mexico in two highly anticipated matches. The first being Wednesday, July 29 at 6 p.m. ET and Saturday, Aug. 1 at 10 a.m. ET. Both games will take place on Field 3 at the U.S. Soccer National Training Center, providing another valuable test for this talented squad.    The homegrown talent has verbally committed to UCLA and heads to camp riding a wave of momentum. Nelson battles hard for possession, and as an attacking midfielder, she is always looking to push forward. Her composure in congested midfield situations and tight spaces has become a hallmark of her game. Looking ahead, Nelson will aim to bring that same confidence and drive into camp, especially as she prepares to face Mexico. As a result, her continued development and ability to impact the game in key moments make her a player to watch on the national stage.     One of the top defenders in her class, Travers has already established herself as a cornerstone for both her club and the U.S. Youth National Team. She will bring her center back qualities from the ECNL playoffs to this month's national team camp. In the WPSL with Cal Storm, Travers consistently demonstrates her reliability on the backline. Notably, Cassie is known for her composure under pressure and her ability to anchor a world-class defense. As she heads into camp, her defensive instincts will continue to rise.     Yoshimura carries the ball through the middle with ease, demanding both space and possession. This approach makes her a dynamic threat every time she steps on the field. Throughout the playoff season with MVLA, her style of play stood out, showcasing her composure and control in midfield. As she heads into July's camp, Yoshimura will look to bring that same confidence and creativity to the national stage. Lastly, her ability to dictate tempo and create opportunities will be one to watch.     Cabigon is a forward with a natural playmaker's instinct. She not only sets up her teammates but also makes smart runs off the ball to get in front of the net and finish chances. This ability was on full display during the playoffs, where she consistently found herself in the right positions. Consequently, as she heads to July's camp, Cabigon will look to bring that same attacking presence and sharp movement to the national team environment.     Coming off a strong run with LA Breakers, Penn made her scoring prowess clear. She found the back of the net twice and assisted her teammates with well-timed passes. Her off-the-ball runs and last-minute changes of direction consistently put her in dangerous positions. In addition, she excels in the stop-and-go game, slowing play down just long enough to burst into space down the line. Penn's electric pace and dynamism set her apart in her age group. As camp begins next week, she will look to bring that same burst of energy and attacking threat to the national stage.
