When discussing the landscape of one of the most competitive markets for producing Division 1 talent, SoCal dominates the youth sports pipeline.

USE THE PROMO CODE almasin30 for a discount on your first subscription

Let's take, for example, the three venues I will be attending during a 4-day period of SoCal Soccer. Included in this series is a training session with a top-level Girls Academy program training with a Philippines Girls national team, the San Diego Surf Cup, and our Prep Soccer Girls ID Camp: SoCal 2026.

I would like to give a huge thanks to [player_tooltip player_id='284726' first='Ryan' last='Solorio'] of the SoCal Reds and her club coach, Carlos Gonzales, for the invitation to the joint training session with his U19 and U17, with the Philippines Girls U16 national team. The training took place at the Great Park in Irvine, CA. OC Park features 24 soccer fields, a tennis center, baseball fields, basketball courts, a theme park, and other amenities in its 500 acres available for club training, matches, and open use when available.

The 90-minute training session looked more like a college-type practice with players making quick, precise passes, working in tight spaces, and finding open pockets. Based on the quality of first touches and superior ball control by all of the players, it is evident that these players are considered to be at the elite level with their experience in training and competition.

The joint training session also created the sense of bringing worlds together, as most recently seen during the men's World Cup. As soccer unites people, it was clearly evident that both sides were clear on their objectives to create a collaborative session and get the necessary reps for the teams' upcoming matches.

After an hour of training, the players were placed into three groups. Two were on the field at a time for a scrimmage, while the other split their players on the touchlines to support with keeping the moving as neutral distributors. The training with no injuries and well-attended always makes for a perfect training session.

During the San Diego Surf Cup, I covered two days of soccer competition featuring Girls U13, U14, and U15 teams. The majority of the teams were from the West Coast, with teams entering multiple tournaments from Washington, Oregon, Arizona, Hawaii, and California.

Also, a few teams from Utah also made it out to the SoCal Sports Complex in Oceanside, CA. One thing that really caught my eye at the tournament was seeing the multiple Hawaii teams and families repping their team's jerseys with their family name on their backs. It was easy for others to see if they were from Hawaii Rush, Albion SC, Hawaii, Leahi SC, or Hawaii Surf.

Many even brought the Hawaiian flag. I have kept my Hawaiian flag in my classroom ever since moving to California in 2002. I like the many players and families who feel a sense of pride when letting people know where we come from.

Lastly, my final day of my SoCal soccer trip will be at our Prep Soccer Girls ID Camp: SoCal at the [program_tooltip program_id='283671' first='LA' last='Galaxy'] Sports Center. I was at the NorCal Camp a week ago. It was another successful event from our previous camp in 2024. Based on the players signed up for SoCal's event, we are anticipating another successful camp. Most interesting is that some of the players attending Sunday's camp on 8/2/2026 are or were competing in the San Diego Surf Cup.

The multilevel support systems in SoCal can be seen as a model for producing the talented players getting to the top-levels of youth and professional soccer. With the women's world cup just around the corner, I'm hoping that this segment will serve as inspiration for other regions of the country to follow.

Soccer is one of my passions, and I am always grateful to be able to support players in getting to the next levels.

Part 1 - Training Session: SoCal Reds (U17), (U19), and Philippines U16 National Team.

https://twitter.com/BayAreaSocScout/status/2083025880574787846?s=20

Part 2 - Training Session: SoCal Reds (U17), (U19), and Philippines U16 National Team.

https://twitter.com/BayAreaSocScout/status/2083030251391852875?s=20

Part 3 - Training Session: SoCal Reds (U17), (U19), and Philippines U16 National Team.

https://twitter.com/BayAreaSocScout/status/2083032497034842244?s=20

Part 4 - Training Session: SoCal Reds (U17), (U19), and Philippines U16 National Team.

https://twitter.com/BayAreaSocScout/status/2083037279535456474?s=20

Part 1 - San Diego Surf Cup: Hawaii Rush vs. Seattle - (U13)

https://twitter.com/BayAreaSocScout/status/2083220146135748618?s=20

Part 2 - San Diego Surf Cup: San Juan vs. [program_tooltip program_id='283389' first='LA' last='Breakers'] - (U13)

https://twitter.com/BayAreaSocScout/status/2083222975869002041?s=20

Part 3 - San Diego Surf Cup: Leahi Soccer Club - Hawaii

https://twitter.com/BayAreaSocScout/status/2083244854285582560?s=20

Part 4 - San Diego Surf Cup: Utah Avalanche Goal vs. [program_tooltip program_id='283470' first='SDSC' last='Surf'] - (U13)

https://twitter.com/BayAreaSocScout/status/2083263420389069222?s=20
