Guilherme Torres | Prep Soccer Scout
Betancourt was the Houston Dynamo ‘s best player in their 3-3 tie with Brazil’s Botafogo in the U19 Super Group. The midfielder scored two of his team’s goals in the match and was one of their pillars in the center of the field. Betancourt started the match in a more advanced role and helped set up offensive plays with his vision and passing. In the second half, he moved a little bit deeper and continued to move the ball well, while also being more active on the defensive side of the game. Betancourt scored two goals with well-placed shots from the outside the box and also stepped into the box to finish chances on some occasions.

With three goals and one assist, all registered in the first half, Betancourt was the most impactful player on the field. The midfielder, who recently featured for the Dynamo’s 2 team in the MLS Next Pro, played a more advanced role than usual, but still looked extremely comfortable there, pulling the strings in their offense. Betancourt was very dynamic in the attacking half, using her body to win space and playing quick, first-time passes that facilitated the team’s playmaking. He displayed a great presence inside the penalty box to finish chances and also had some excellent runs on the ball in the final third, primarily through the right side of the Dynamo’s offense, which often created good opportunities for the team.

Betancourt played a little higher up in the field than he’s used to, in somewhat of a box-to-box role, and did a very good job there. He used his physicality to win duels in the center of the field and helped the Dynamo control the flow of the game. The midfielder was excellent at finding pockets of space to operate between the lines and connect quick passes from there, finding his teammates in good spots and making this difficult for the Toros’ backline. Betancourt also had a strong presence inside the penalty box and had two good opportunities to score – in the first half, he made a turn on a defender and saw his shot stopped by the goalkeeper and, in the second, his header was a little too high.

Betancourt is a relatively new addition to Houston Dynamo’s academy. He was a standout for the Rise MLS Next teams for the past couple of seasons, and earned a spot in the Best XI team in December. He is a center back who is highly regarded for his skill and decision-making on the ball. He will be another one to watch as he could shoot up the rankings as he gets the opportunities with the top youth teams at that MLS academy.
