The start of the West Catholic League featured two top level teams coming in to the match with 1-0 records in league play. It was a sunny day in San Jose at the Brigit Whims Memorial Field. The Bellarmine Bell are the 47th ranked team in CA, and the Saint Francis Lancers are last year's WCAL league champs and CIFCCS D1 runner up. Both teams featured technical and high level club players which demonstrated great passing combinations and ball movement to get players within scoring range, but the Bells were able to capitalized on their opportunities. Leading the way to a decisive 5-0 victory for Bellarmine was Senior Forward [player_tooltip player_id='277899' first='Gregory' last='Gutierrez']. His impressive Hat Trick kept fans and players on their feet on a nice 64 degrees weather. Gregory is also a candidate for league leading scorer as he now has 11 goals in 8 matches. Other standouts for the Bells were Junior Center Back Ben Sutton, who commanded the back and stifled attacking attempts. Also, Junior GK Drew McClelland provided key saves to ensure the shutout. Key players for the Lancers side are Junior Midfielder/Captain Michael Scavotto who demonstrated quick cuts between defenders, and clean passes to all players on the field. Andrew Huber a Senior Midfielder/Captain showed his strengths while breaking up attacks in the middle and by winning 50/50 balls in the air. The Lancers, led by Head Coach Rusty Millard will be seeking to get back into form and the Bells, led by Head Coach Conor Salcido with a (6-1-1) overall record and 1st place in league standings will focus on making a run at a 6th CCS Championship in 8 years (2018-2025).
