Last weekend was a busy one in the Texas High School soccer scene, with multiple tournaments taking place across the state as teams prepare for the start of district play.

Arguably the biggest of them, the I-10 Shootout was held in Katy, a Houston suburb, reuniting 72 girls' varsity teams from different parts of the state in its 20th edition, which ran from Thursday to Saturday in ten high school campuses and two Katy ISD stadiums. Prep Soccer Texas attended the tournament, covering six matches in the first two days of the event and getting to watch as many as 12 participating teams in four different brackets.

I-10 Shootout - Day 1 Photos

I-10 Shootout - Day 2 Photos

We were able to watch some impressive performances across the two days and are now taking the week to list the players who seem poised to make a big impact in their teams as the high school season enters its most important stage. Today, we look into the center backs:

Kates was part of the Friendswood team that competed in the Cougar Bracket. I got to watch them in a 3-0 first-round loss to bracket winners Atascocita and, despite the three goals conceded, the center back was in great form - she was actually playing higher on the field, trying to support their offense when the last two goals were scored. Kates dominated the penalty box, using her great positioning to make clearances both in the air and on the ground. She also did well by taking goal kicks and sending long free kicks into the box. The sophomore was moved to midfield during the second half to add some quality to the team's offense and showed solid skills on the ball, beating opponents off the dribble and making plays in the attacking half.

Bartlett appeared for the Lake Travis team that was in action in the Warrior Bracket. She was one of their standouts in a first-round 1-1 tie with A&M Consolidated that resulted in a defeat in PKs. The freshman was excellent as a ball-playing center back, playing primarily on the right side of their back three and making a big impact in the team's offense, not only by distributing the ball efficiently, but also by infiltrating into the attacking half to make plays. Barlett then moved to the center of their backline and continued to have an active role in their buildup. Despite not being very physical, she was also very successful defensively, playing hard and making stops inside and around the penalty box.

Homs played for the Tompkins team that triumphed in the Falcon bracket while conceding just one goal in three matches. I got to watch her team in a 6-0 first-round win over O'Connor in which they dominated from the start and weren't under much pressure. The sophomore was asked to defend in transition on some occasions when their opponents tried to hit on the counter, and was always ready to make stops, showing solid pace to track them down and good instincts to make plays for the ball. Homs was much more active in possession and did a good job helping Tompkins move the ball around and make plays in the attacking half.

Brown played for the O'Connor team that competed in teh Falcon bracket. I attended their 6-0 loss to Tompkins and, even though it clearly wasn't a strong defensive performance from the team, the freshman did fairly well from an individual standpoint, indicating she can develop into a solid center back. Brown was very determined defensively and put good energy into her defensive actions, having success at making stops in some of them. She also showed calm and confidence in possession, being one of the few players in her team to put the ball on the ground and try to build from the back.

Scheet played for the Lamar team that competed in the Warrior Bracket. I covered their 2-0 win over Ridge Point in the Consolation Bracket, which was probably their best performance in the tournament - and their only clean sheet. The senior anchored their backline with great efficiency, playing as a right-sided center back and playing with tremendous firmness in her actions. Scheet was very strong in 1v1 duels inside and around the penalty box and also did well when she had to step outside of her zone to cover her teammates on the flank or in midfield.

Currie was part of the Ridge Point team that earned a win, a loss and a tie in the Warrior Bracket. I was there in their 2-0 to Lamar in the Consolation Bracket and saw her lead the team's backline with strong and well-timed actions. With her team trailing for most of the match, the senior was exposed defensively as they pushed for goals, and showed good ability to cover ground and firmness in duels to stop attacking plays from opponents. Currie also did well on the ball, distributing the ball intelligently with short passes and hitting some long diagonals with remarkable precision.

Labay was part of the Seven Lakes team that hosted the Spartan Bracket. I caught their second-round 2-1 loss to Stratford and thought she was one of the best players on her team, leading their backline with solidness and efficiency. The senior was deployed in the center of their back three and used her long frame and great positioning to protect the penalty box, clearing crosses and blocking shots. Labay was very quick at reading plays and seemed to always be one step ahead of everyone else. She also showed good mobility to cover teammates out wide.

Lawless was a pillar in the backline of the Stratford team that ended up in second place in the Spartan Bracket. She was very good in their 2-1 second-round victory over Stratford, showing the ability to defend at a high level in different ways. The junior center back used her positioning to intercept long passes in the air, showed great physical strength to push opponents away from the goal in holdup plays and impeccable timing to tackle and block shots inside and around the penalty box. Lawless was very active in possession, too, playing a big role in the team's buildup and connecting some great long passes out of the back.
