Expert Analysis
Guilherme Torres | Prep Soccer Scout
Lawless was a pillar in the backline of the Stratford team that ended up in second place in the Spartan Bracket. She was very good in their 2-1 second-round victory over Stratford, showing the ability to defend at a high level in different ways. The junior center back used her positioning to intercept long passes in the air, showed great physical strength to push opponents away from the goal in holdup plays and impeccable timing to tackle and block shots inside and around the penalty box. Lawless was very active in possession, too, playing a big role in the team’s buildup and connecting some great long passes out of the back.

Albion got a lot from their offensive players to build their solid victory, but the backline, led by Lawless, also did a good job in getting a clean sheet. The center back used her height and positioning extremely well to intercept their long passes, denying their opponents the ball in the final third. Lawless also did well when she had to defend in transition, stepping up to stop play at the right moment, and was very strong with how she pressed opponents when they had the ball, forcing them back. The center back thrived with her distribution as well, moving the ball efficiently and even stepping into the attacking half on some occasions to support the attack.

Lawless had a solid shift in central defense for Albion and was just three minutes short of leading her team to a clean sheet against a strong Dallas team. Playing as a right-sided center back, she defended the penalty box very well, winning duels in the air and clearing crosses that went into her zone. Lawless also did well when she was dragged away from the penalty box, showing good mobility to cover ground and staying tight to opponents to keep them under pressure. She thrived with her positioning and appeared in the right spots to cover her teammates on many occasions.

Lawless will appear with the Albion Hurricanes FC 09 team that will compete against Eclipse Select, San Diego Surf and Seattle United in Dallas. She’s been a stud in their backline for some years now and her game has continued to develop in the period. Lawless is extremely athletic and she uses that to her advantage, but there’s a lot more to like in her defensive game, including her ability to read the game, her mobility and her firmness when tackling opponents. She typically plays as a right-sided center back and does good work in helping initiate their buildup. Lawless is also very strong in the air and typically appears well on both penalty boxes.

A freshman, Lawless immediately became a key piece for Stratford and made their defense even stronger. Forming the team’s center back duo with junior Hannah Ryan, she was consistent during the entire season and helped her team produce 12 clean sheets in 14 district matches. A physical player, Lawless is great at using her athleticism to protect the team’s penalty box but is also very successful when defending in space. The defender also has good quality on the ball, connecting efficient passes out of the back, and can be a threat in the air in attacking set pieces.

The freshman center back anchored Stratford’s backline playing with impressive solidness on the right side. The Spartans made changes in every other piece of their defense, with some players featuring in multiple positions, and Lawless was the only one to keep her spot from start to finish. She did a very good job of protecting her area of the field, both winning individual duels and stepping up to cover her teammates when they were beaten. The center back was also very calm and efficient in possession, connecting good passes out of the back.
