ECNL San Diego Day 2 Standouts

After the rain subsided from Sunday the conditions were excellent on Monday for soccer. Wind was minimal and temperatures were in the 60's for most of the day. The games were still only 50 minutes long with a quick switch at 25 minutes to switch sides. I think overall ECNL did a fantastic job with this event given the unpredictable nature of the weather. Here were some standout performers from day 2 of this event.

What a player. Gonzalez is electric on the dribble multiple times picking up the ball and dribbling multiple Rebels defenders on her way to a shot or cross. She scored the games only goal from a free kick about 25 yards from goal that dipped over the wall and nestled right into the corner of the goal. One to keep an eye on in the future for sure.

Padilla had an excellent showing against Lodestar albeit in a 2-0 loss. The center back reads the game exceptionally well and makes great decisions with the ball. She has a great sense of went to break a line with a pass or on the dribble. Her lack of size is made up for with her tenacious and gritty style of play. Coming out on top of duels with players who are much bigger than she is. She also has excellent recovery speed which in the modern game is becoming more and more prevalent.

Amazing athletic profile that has giant upside. She pairs her height with good speed and overall athleticism. Holds the ball up well and possesses strong technical skills. She lead the line for Lonestar against SF Elite playing a pivotal role in her teams 2-0 victory.

Kamoe scored the best goal I saw all weekend. The ball was cleared on the ground by a Stanislaus Surf defender and Kamoe attacked the ball without hesitation and smashed the ball from about 20 yards away with her right foot in the bottom left corner of the goal leaving the goalkeeper with no chance of getting to it. The La Roca midfielder had a strong performance, distributing the ball well and looking forward to make things happen every time she got on it. She hustled defensively and won a handful of ground duels.

The hardest position to find in the sport is a dominant left footed center back. Smudrick is just that. The Stanislaus Surf defender has a bright future. She displayed toughness, high IQ and calmness on the ball that is needed from a top center back. She made a handful of goal saving tackles and stifled opposition dribblers time and time again. Smudrick has Power 4 potential.

I have never seen such a small player dominate the air the way Blair did on Monday. She is all of 5'2 but must've won 10 headers throughout the game. Blair possesses a hunger to attack the ball at a level you just don't see very often. She has excellent technique and is very comfortable in possession creating time for herself on the dribble with crafty three point turns. Don't let her small stature fool you Blair plays big and if she continues to improve will be a top talent in her class.

Big physical presence at the back for Sporting California. Her distribution was excellent, pinging balls all over the field which at this age is incredibly rare. She is tough as nails plowing through tackles and putting the fear of God into opposition attackers who go in to 50-50's with her.

Mcnally has excellent feet and vision. Very gifted technically scoring a good goal and being her teams standout performer against SoCal Blues. She has a nice burst of speed and flashed excellent hold up play with her back to goal. Mcnally has elite potential.
