A recent addition to the Dynamo, having moved alongside his father, former player Josh Wolff, who was hired as an assistant coach to the club, Wolff needed no time to integrate with his new teammates. The former Austin FC center back anchored the Dynamo’s backline against Minnesota, leading them to a clean sheet. Besides making solid defensive interventions, Wolff also played a central role in the team’s buildup, not only using his skilled left foot to connect perfect passes out of the back, but also orchestrating the team’s movement by shouting instructions to his teammates who were on the ball. He also appeared well offensively, assisting Caro in the team’s second goal with a well-weighted header.

The center back had a good defensive performance, helping close the space in the center of the penalty box and winning most of the duels he was involved in. However, with Austin trailing from the start, Wolff’s quality on the ball was perhaps even more valuable. The center back was easily the player in his team with the most touches and his ability to pass out of the back helped his team initiate offensive plays against a well-organized Dynamo defense. Wolff displayed impressive calm and vision with his passing and repeatedly found teammates in good spots.

Wolff is not a new name by any means. He is the son of one of the US Soccer greats and has two older brothers already in the US Youth National Team system. But he has not mentioned on PrepSoccer before so the standout from Austin FC deserves a special mention here. He is the left center back on the Austin FC U15 MLS Next team. There are times when the game seems too easy for Wolff. He is just toying with center forwards during the games in MLS Next. Austin FC’s press releases mention that he has played midfield as well for the youth academy, but I’ve only seen him at left center back. However, the skill on the ball shines brightly for him as a center back. He is so calm on the ball and comfortable in playing out in the build-out. It’s very rare when he loses possession of the ball. Wolff has all the tools to be a top left center back at the professional level in the future.
