Expert Analysis
Anthony McPherson | Prep Soccer Scout
The most complete holding midfielder I evaluated all weekend. Galvan possesses the rare combination of defensive tenacity and offensive creativity that makes her a game-changer from the deep-lying position. Her thunderous right foot produced several dangerous strikes from distance, keeping opposing defenses honest and creating space for teammates.
What separates Galvan from other defensive midfielders is her ability to stretch the field vertically. She consistently delivered pinpoint lead passes that split lines and created scoring chances, while her set piece delivery from corners and free kicks was consistently dangerous. Defensively, she’s fearless in the tackle and wins crucial duels in transition.

College programs searching for a holding midfielder who can anchor the defense while contributing offensively will find Galvan’s skillset invaluable. Her soccer IQ allows her to read the game two steps ahead, and her range of passing opens up tactical flexibility that coaches crave. This is a prospect who can transform a program’s midfield immediately.

Position: Holding Midfielder | Class: 2027
Ava Galvan Ava Galvan M State #221 Nation CA is redefining what it means to be a holding midfielder. While most players in her position focus solely on breaking up play and distributing to teammates, Galvan has established herself among the league’s top scorers despite operating from a defensive midfield role. This remarkable offensive production against elite ECNL competition hints at a tactical understanding and technical ceiling that separates her from conventional defensive midfielders.
What immediately stands out about Galvan’s game is her ability to identify goalkeeper vulnerabilities from distance and exploit them with stunning precision. Galvan has developed an exceptional long-range striking ability that isn’t merely about power but calculated placement. She converts what most players would view as low-percentage opportunities into genuine scoring threats, keeping opposing defenses honest even when she’s 25 yards from goal.
I expect to see Ava be the difference maker in one or more of the games this coming weekend, maybe sealing the deal with a long range, jaw dropping shot. I have seen it enough times to know it is always there just waiting to be unleashed. She sneaks through central channels to create numerical advantages, a lot of opponents struggle to track and BANG… ball is in the back of the net.
Ava is special because she sees opportunities that other players don’t even know exist. She sees the game two plays ahead of everyone else. She’s going to be special at the next level.

, Galvan showcases an exceptional ability to identify goalkeeper vulnerabilities from distance—then exploit them with stunning precision. Her long-range striking ability isn’t merely about power but calculated placement, converting what most players would view as low-percentage opportunities into genuine scoring threats.
Perhaps most impressive is her tactical intelligence in choosing moments to abandon her defensive responsibilities. With blistering pace rarely seen in holding midfielders, Galvan transforms from defensive shield to attacking catalyst in seconds—surging through central channels to create numerical advantages that opponents struggle to track.
This positional fluidity makes her particularly valuable at the collegiate level, where tactical versatility often translates to immediate playing time. Programs seeking that rare midfielder who combines defensive security with genuine scoring threat will find in Galvan the perfect blueprint for the modern two-way midfielder.
As the 2027 class takes shape, Galvan stands out as that unique prospect who offers solutions at multiple positions—the kind of player who elevates entire systems rather than simply filling a specific role. Smart programs identify these multi-dimensional talents early, recognizing their transformative potential before the wider recruiting world catches on.

Galvan was outstanding in the win over Nationals. She was so good on the ball against one of the best teams in the nation. She created chances for her team, but she also never lost possession of the ball for her side. She was smart, calm, and brilliant. Galvan is a real star of the ECNL.

Listed as a forward/midfielder on her player profile, I saw Galvan play as a defensive midfielder for Rebels SC 08 ECNL. She is right footed, composed on the ball, and showed excellent ball-striking technique. She showed that she was comfortable playing out of pressure and did well tactically in adjusting her position to provide a passing lane for her teammates. One aspect of her game that could improve is on the defensive side of the ball. She was a willing tackler, but too many players withstood her tackles and kept possession of the ball. She needs to put more conviction into her tackles when she sees the opportunity to win possession. The Rebels 08 squad looks like it could be one to watch this season as they have some top talent in the 2026 and 2027s classes.
