rnGates played at the center of the defense for SLSG Navy – call it a back three or a back five. Gates is the pendulum for how it operates. She is the ball-winner against the center forward – reads the game well, quick to react. Gates also has elite recovery speed. She is quick to go to the ground for a slide tackle and does not quit on a play. She can be a bit cavalier in possession – blind turns, extra touches in the buildout – but she seems quick to learn and rarely makes the same mistake twice. I think the confidence she has to play against pressure is a really promising sign for how she will handle adversity at the next level.
