Expert Analysis

She played primarily as a left back, but moved up once her team was in the attacking third. Sydney’s strong throw-ins almost resulted in a goal or two. She sent sent one to the penalty area to a teammate who struck it cleanly, but it pinged off the crossbar. Sydney also made clean tackles, strong headers, and showed footwork skills to play the ball from the back line. More of a box-to-box player who can deliver on both ends of the pitch. The class of 2029 rankings riser is the #26 player in CA and the #7 defender. Her game awareness, elite athleticism, and ability to make big plays will definitely help her get to the next level.

Recently in November, she competed at Surf College Cup and was part of a back line that didn’t allow a single goal during the entire showcase. In December, she participated in the SoCal Olympic Development Program training pool. She was selected for the traveling team to represent SoCal at the ODP Regional Championships in Mesa, Arizona, in early January. She’s a versatile wingback who thrives on either side; her elite athleticism—combining speed, strength, agility, and height—allows her to disrupt attacks and transition into the offensive third with ease. At Surf Cup, she was a consistent force down the flank, demonstrating her stamina, game awareness, and ability to drive plays forward through precise distribution and sharp reads of the field. A vocal leader and composed defender, Roddick brings both grit and polish to the back line and is expected to make an immediate impact at the high school level as she enters her freshman year. Her Surf Cup performance also drew praise from a highly respected professional coach with multiple ECNL national championships, who highlighted her elite athleticism, work rate, and professional-level composure – Looking forward to seeing her in our next rankings update.

Roddick makes things look so easy and so smooth. She has such flluid and athletic movements to where she always seems to be in complete control. Even when she’s being physical with a wide forward, it looks effortless and controlled. She’s very smooth on the ball and does a good job of pushing the ball into space and using her speed to beat defenders. She is precise in her movements, crisp and accurate with her passes as she is fantastic about picking the right ball to play. She is a dual threat as she can go forward and help in the attack, but she always tracks backs and does not forget about her defensive responsibilities.
