Spicer, a key part of St. Ignatius’ (Ohio) FAB 50 No. 1 boys squad, verbally committed to the Irish on a phone call Monday night.
“I went on a visit Thursday and Friday, and I loved every minute of it,” the junior said. “I knew when I got there, this was the place for me. … I hung out with the team. The kids were super nice, super welcoming. And the coaching staff are such great people.”
Spicer plays club soccer for Team Challenger.
The attacking midfielder has scored 20 goals and added eight assists this high school season as the Wildcats are 17-0 and angling toward a third straight state title and a third straight FAB 50 national crown. St. Ignatius is undefeated during Spicer’s three-year tenure with the program. He was listed on the PrepSoccer.net Midfielder All-America Watch List.
Notre Dame was interested in Spicer for his attacking and technical ability. He projects as an attacking midfielder for Notre Dame, but in the role of setting up the forwards and wing players for better scoring chances.
“They signed great wings and strikers, and they need someone to feed the ball to the goalscorers,” Spicer said.
The Notre Dame visit last week was his — and now only — official visit. He shadowed former St. Ignatius and current Nore Dame sophomore Matthew McLaughlin.
Spicer is the first confirmed Class of 2023 commit for Notre Dame.
