George Ranch Longhorns
The George Ranch Longhorns from Richmond compete in the UIL’s Division 6A – Region 3, District 20. The school has made it to the playoffs only once, in 2021, and is yet to win its first postseason match. With quality players in every position, the Longhorns have what it takes to do it this season.
Players to Watch
Gregor Jones
Gregor Jones
The Longhorns have a stud between the posts in Jones. A dual-sport athlete (soccer and football), he uses his massive frame to fill the goal really well and is very complete and reliable with his skill set. Jones is incredibly agile to make short-range saves but to get off his line and pressure attackers before they finish too. He’s also extremely reliable when collecting crosses in the penalty box and transmits a lot of stability to the team.
Reid Longwell
Reid Longwell
A center back who uses his size and athleticism very well to win balls, Longwell is very efficient in what he does. One of the team’s captains, he’s very consistent and solid with his defensive plays and has a high success rate when he attempts to stop plays. Longwell will do whatever it takes to win the ball or, at least, slow the play down and won’t give up if he’s beaten in his first tackle attempt. He’s also very strong in the air defensively and offensively.
David Michel
David Michel
Michel forms a solid center back duo with Longwell but is very versatile and can also play out wide for the Longhorns. He uses his size and athleticism very well to make plays on the defensive side of the game but is also very skilled with his left foot and capable of connecting good passes and helping the team move the ball up the field. A kicker for George Ranch’s football team, he’s very dangerous when taking free kicks from distance.
Tobias Herrera
Tobias Herrera
Very dynamic and clean on the ball, Herrera plays a key role for George Ranch from the center of the field. He has some defensive duties with the Longhorns, but is at his best on offense, where he can use his diverse skill set to create chances. Also capable of playing as a right back, Herrera is an excellent passer, but is also very good at making runs into the penalty box and finishing from distance. He’s very smart with the ball at his feet and is also a prolific set pieces taker.
Armani Obasi
Armani Obasi
Obasi adds some pace and unpredictability to his very organized George Ranch team. He plays his winger role very aggressively, repeatedly trying to use his pace and dribbling skills to get to the end line. He has a good variety of moves to beat his opponents off the dribble and can also finish plays. Obasi typically plays more on the right side, but is very dangerous when cutting inside and bringing the ball to the central area of the field.
