The PrepSoccer State rankings for Pennsylvania’s 2027 class were released this week. The scouting process for the freshman group included an early look at the 2028 standouts who are playing alongside or against some of those top 2027s at the club level.
Below is a scouting report on a few names to know from the 2028 group.
Korney is a winger/attacking player for the Pittsburgh Riverhounds 08 ECNL team. She played on the club’s 09 and 08 ECNL teams last season and has earned the promotion to playing with the 08 group, which is mostly 2026 players. Korney is a special talent. She has pace, skill, and an exquisite left foot. She played on the left wing for her club side last year and won most of her duels against older outside backs in a tough ECNL Conference. Korney has all the traits of a player who is going to be a big time prospect in the future.
Piontka is a center back for the Century United 09 GA team. She is smooth on the ball and looks as clean technically as most midfielders. She is comfortable playing out of pressure and can dribble around pressing forwards with ease. It’s sky high potential for Piontka.
Pettit is an outside back for the Century United 09 GA team. She impressed me with her two-way play at the Girls Academy Winter Showcase. In the attack, she made a difference in the final-third. She can hit a good cross, but she is also capable of cutting inside and beating the opposition on the dribble. Defensively, she stood out attackers with her wins in the duel.
Byrne is an outside defender for Penn Fusion 09 ECNL. I’ve seen her play in the left back spot for her club team. She’s a tough player. She took a hard challenge in a recent game and bounced right back up. She is a two-way player with quickness. She combines well with the winger and can make the overlapping run. Byrne has shown the potential early in the season to be a top outside back in her conference in the ECNL.
Costa is an outside back on the Penn Fusion 09 ECNL team. I’ve seen her play as a right back. Penn Fusion leaves the wings open for the outside backs to attack and possibly hit a cross. Costa succeeds often at that. She will fly down the touch line and gain a step on her mark with her pace. When she has space, she is good at picking up her head and hitting the cross with an intended target. She provided an assist in a recent game with her offensive contributions.
Helwig is a midfielder for FC Declo. She is part of the US Youth National Team Talent ID events as one of the top players in the region. She has all of the tools to be a top player in that role at the national level. Her first touch and comfort on the ball really stand out from her peers. She is also a standout in her ball striking and can hit accurate passes over 40 yards. Helwig is going to be one to watch for the future.
Highlights
Gutowski is a top talent in the 09 age group. She is playing up with the Penn Fusion 08 ECNL team this season. She has been part of the US Soccer Talent ID events in the past and is a name to remember for a call-up to the full national team. She was outstanding during the team’s run in the ECNL playoffs last season. She has the mentality to compete against physical players and does not shy away from a challenge. She is strong on the ball and has great balance. Gutowski is a top talent in the 2028 class.
