Continue ReadingThe US Club Soccer id2 Training Camp in Irvine, California was held last weekend. The event brought together three dozen of the top players in the 2010 age group in the country. This was the second training camp for this age group. There was one held in Florida last month.
Following the two training camps, the staff at US Club Soccer/id2 will meet to assemble a roster for the upcoming international tour. The player talent identification event has been successful in the past at showcasing the next generation of top talent from the U.S. The long list of alums includes many players on the National Team.
Below are a few of the names to know from this camp and the full roster can be found at the bottom of the page.
Ella Ahn
Ella Ahn
Ahn is a midfielder on the San Diego Surf 2010 ECNL team. She is also part of the US Youth Soccer Futsal National Team. Ahn is right footed. She plays as a box-to-box midfielder. She offers the all-around game that really shines in that role – and also makes her a valuable piece of a small roster because she could play all three spots in the midfield. Ahn’s quality on the ball shines at the ECNL level. I love the way she defends. She’s an active player in the regard – she does not watch but gets involved in trying to win back possession quickly. Ahn is going to earn a lot of fans with that determined approach – plus when she is on the ball, she makes excellent decisions and does well keeping possession for her side.
Bella Martin
Bella Martin
Martin is a goalkeeper on the Legends 2010 ECNL team. She is left footed. The strengths of her game is her shot-stopping and communication. She does well in holding onto shots and not allowing rebounds. She’s made some big saves in her young club career including having a good read on penalty kicks. Martin’s distribution with the ball at her feet is another point of emphasis of her game. She hits accurate passes with pace. She is one of the top goalkeepers in the region.
Reece Li
Reece Li
Li is a defender on the San Diego Surf 2010 ECNL team. I’ve seen her play left center back this season for Surf. She can also play as the defensive midfielder or as the right center back. There are very few players who offer the quality that Li does on the ball who can defend at the same level that she does. She is an elite prospect for that position, but she is also the type of player who has played in a possession dominant style of play for a long time. She can play on the back foot too – and Surf has challenged the 2010 group with games against top 2009 teams. It’s a very complete team though and there is a reason why so many players from Surf are on this Training Camp Roster. The center back stands out from the group for the ease in how she combines with teammates and moves through the center of the field. She is a weapon on the ball because she can dribble out of pressure and make splitting passes from a deep play maker role. The potential is endless for Li.

Haynesworth is a defender on the Phoenix Rising 2010 ECNL team. I’ve seen her play left back for her club team. She looks to be right footed and takes free kicks with her right foot. She has the tools to be a top performer at the highest levels of the game. She’s athletic with quick feet and a fluid runner. She covers a ton of ground during the game as she seems to have an endless supply of energy. On the ball, she has good attacking qualities and has excellent technique when striking the ball. Haynesworth is a name to know from this group.
Cassie Travers
Cassie Travers
Cassie Travers is a defender on the Bay Area Surf ECNL team. She plays up an age group with the 2009 team. Travers has featured as the left center back in games this season. She immediately stands out for her quality on the ball. Bay Area Surf puts a lot of pressure on the center backs in the build-up both in terms of composure on the ball and decision-making. Travers playing up an age group and handling that with expertise has been impressive to watch.
Thaleya Walker
Thaleya Walker
Walker is an attacking midfielder from Battleborn FC. She is a member of the NorCal ODP. She is also an elite skier. Walker impressed from the NorCal events for her creativity on the ball. She plays on a boys team at the club level and it shows against her peers. She is playing the game at a quicker pace than most. She is also one of the top players in this camp at ball skills and creativity. She is one of the players to watch from outside of the ECNL and GA.
