Prep Soccer has been following the action in the Houston area, covering multiple matches a week and reporting on them with photo galleries and player reports.
We’re also paying special attention to the new faces emerging in the region and will periodically list some of the most promising freshmen we’ve spotted on the field while covering the HS season. Here’s the first group:
Vontoure has been in action with Summer Creek in the High School season. She has a lot of the qualities coaches would love to have in a goalkeeper and will certainly develop them over the next few years. Vontoure is a big and physical goalkeeper, who takes up a lot of space in goal and dominates the penalty box when she goes out of the goal to collect crosses, but her size doesn’t hurt her agility between the posts at all. Another thing to like in her game is how calm she is when on the field, which allows her to produce well under pressure. Vontoure also has a strong right leg and her goal kicks typically land well after the midfield lane.
Goodwin is part of one of the strongest teams in the region in Stratford and has already earned a spot in their starting lineup. Her versatility certainly helped as she’s capable of playing anywhere across the backline. Goodwin is tall and physical, but also reads the game well and is always in the perfect spot to make plays on the defensive side of the game. She’s also very capable when pushing forward from the outside back position, being able to dribble the ball forward and to connect good passes in the final third.
Highlights
Colby Cork
Colby Cork
Cork has been playing an important role in midfield for Clear Springs. She has a very complete skill set and can play anywhere at a high level, but is at her best in the center of the field, where she can perform with great intensity and dictate the team’s rhythm. Cork typically plays as a center midfield and is involved on both sides of the game, helping the Chargers regain possession and create chances with her accurate passes. She’s been very active offensively too, having registered three goals and three assists already.
Olivia Powell
Olivia Powell
Powell is one of a handful of freshmen that are part of Lumberton’s roster this season. She is yet to establish herself as a key piece for the team, but certainly has the skills to do it. Powell plays as a forward, but is very active in every phase of the game, dropping back to get on the ball and make plays. She’s really good at dribbling the ball forward and has very good vision with her passing in the atacking half. Powell can also be a threat with her pace when she runs behind the backline.
Corcoran was the MVP in Katy’s victory at the I-10 Shootout back in January. A lefty, she’s very skilled on the ball and has been playing on the left side of the team’s attack. Corcoran has got a ton of moves to beat opponents off the dribble and is very difficult to defend because she can operate in tight spaces and is also very good when she has room to push forward, combininig great pace and an interesting ability to shield the ball with her body. Primarily a winger, she has good presence inside the penalty box and finishes well with either foot.
