MLS Next U16: Cap City overcome the Rangers in seven-goal match

The 2026-2027 MLS Next season is officially underway, and between now and June, the top boys' teams in the country will go against each other week in, week out, fighting for victories on the field. On Saturday, September 19, we were in attendance when the [program_tooltip program_id='283658' first='Houston' last='Rangers'] and [program_tooltip program_id='283624' first='Capital' last='City SC'] met in the U16 age group at Paul D Rushing Park, in Katy. The match had plenty of goals (and beautiful ones), and ended with the visiting Capital City triumphing 4-3.   <ul class="wp-block-list"> <li>[program_tooltip program_id='283658' first='Houston' last='Rangers'] U16 vs. [program_tooltip program_id='283624' first='Capital' last='City SC'] U16 - <a href="https://prepsoccer.com/2026/09/mls-next-u16-houston-rangers-vs-capital-city-sc-photos/">Photos</a></li> </ul>   <figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-instagram wp-block-embed-instagram"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper"> https://www.instagram.com/p/DdrVZ_QFFxr/?img_index=1 </div></figure>   The Rangers started ahead, with forward [player_tooltip player_id='378020' first='Aron' last='Hurtado'] converting a penalty kick drawn by [player_tooltip player_id='377865' first='Idrissa' last='Djimde'] in the seventh minute of the first half. Their lead, however, lasted only five minutes, as Capital City quickly tied it with forward Chuka Wilson-Ofunim. A long-distance shot by defender Owen Lockerd placed the hosts ahead again in the 19th minute, but the visitors leveled the score another time in the 30th minute thanks to a long free-kick shot by outside back [player_tooltip player_id='295606' first='Tyler' last='Elston']. Capital City's go-ahead goal was scored in the 40th minute, when forward Anthony Nwabuzor intercepted a back pass by the Rangers, dribbled the ball past the goalkeeper, and sent it into an open net.   The second half went 40 minutes without a goal, but Wilson-Ofunim broke the deadlock after making a great run behind the backline and receiving an excellent pass from midfielder [player_tooltip player_id='378149' first='Nicholas' last='Arellano']. The Rangers got one back before the final whistle with defender [player_tooltip player_id='333367' first='Roberto' last='Martinez'] hitting a beautiful free-kick shot from well outside the penalty box, but were unable to push for an equalizer.   <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Players of the Match</h2>    Wilson-Ofunim was decisive in Capital City's victory, scoring the team's first and last goals in the match. The forward didn't get many chances to score, but capitalized on both of them, showing calm and efficiency in front of the goal. Wilson-Ofunim did a great job of beating a Rangers defender with his first touch in his first goal and timed his run in behind extremely well to get in a position to score the second. He did a good job when working with his back to the goal, was a constant option with his runs and showed great energy to press defenders.    <figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img src="https://prepsoccer.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/8/2026/09/2J4A0395.jpg?w=1024" alt="" class="wp-image-411546" /></figure>    Elston scored Capital City's third goal in the match with a beautiful free-kick shot from well outside the penalty box and contributed to the team's victory in a few other ways. Playing as a left back, he was very solid defensively, facing some of the Rangers' most talented wingers and doing a good job of keeping them outside the box. Elston didn't push forward very often, but added to the team's buildup with his solid passing out of the back. Playing as a box-to-box midfielder, he appeared well on both sides of the ball. Guerrero was very intense when playing defense, and, despite not being very physical, he was highly effective at dispossessing opponents. When on the ball, he stood out for his ability to quickly push it forward, turning defense into offense with smart moves and strong runs, and his intelligent distribution.    <figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img src="https://prepsoccer.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/8/2026/09/2J4A0344.jpg?w=1024" alt="" class="wp-image-411526" /></figure>    A forward, Stokes played in midfield for Capital City and, despite only appearing in the first half, had an important role in the team's victory. He thrived in a box-to-box role, playing a solid two-way role on the right side of the team's midfield. Stokes played defense with good determination and used his physical strength to win duels in the center of the field. He consistently supported the team's offense as well, driving the ball forward and connecting good passes around the penalty box.    <figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img src="https://prepsoccer.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/8/2026/09/2J4A0329.jpg?w=1024" alt="" class="wp-image-411519" /></figure>    Djimde was the Rangers' most dangerous attacking player and was involved in the team's best offensive plays. He spent time on both wings and did a good job of going at defenders 1v1, creating some good chances for the team. Djimde delivered good crosses into the box and also fired some nice shots on goal. He drew the penalty kick that led to his team's first goal after a play on the left side of the penalty box.    <figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img src="https://prepsoccer.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/8/2026/09/2J4A0347.jpg?w=1024" alt="" class="wp-image-411528" /></figure>    Fuenmayor had a solid shift at center midfield for the Rangers and was one of the team's most consistent players in the match. He formed a nice midfield duo with [player_tooltip player_id='295858' first='Christopher' last='Zaragoza'] and appeared well on both sides of the ball. Fuenmayor was very active and determined defensively and showed quality on the ball, standing out for his distribution and passing ability.
