The younger age groups were full of fierce competition as teams fought for an opening day result. Check out the players who stood out from the games Prep Soccer saw on Sunday.

Eden Shaw, Atlanta Fire 2010- Shaw impressed with a save in the first half as she caught an effort drilled out her. Following the collection of the ball, she launched the counter attack with a throw that nearly made it to half field. Fire scored off the move as her long throw launched a successful counter attack.

Kayleigh Cabigon, San Diego Surf 2010 - Surf put together a comprehensive performance on Sunday as they opened the event with a convincing victory over VA Union. Cabigon scored twice while I was in attendance. The center forward did well in playing between the center backs and on the offside line. She was a handful for the defense and lethal with chances.

Ally Piper Damron, San Diego Surf 2010 - Damron scored the opener on a nice finish from outside of the box. The left back did everything well for her side. As one of the captain's of the team, she set the tone with excellent passing and quick reactions in the transition of the game.

Reece Li, San Diego Surf 2010 - Li looked every bit the part of one of the top players in the 2010 age group on Sunday. The left center back for Surf hardly put a foot wrong defensively and often started the attack with her sublime passing.

Ella Ahn, San Diego Surf 2010 - The Surf midfield was dominant in this game and Ahn was especially good. She is the engine of this team and showed that on Sunday with her work in the center of the pitch. Savannah Carter and Lauren Gaviola were also bright spots in the midfield.

Pauline Maletz, Virginia Union 2010 - Maletz created chances for her side with her skill and clever play. The forward/winger is one to watch as she showed glimpses of being a top attacker with her nifty footwork and drive against a stacked Surf team.

Dorothea Perry, MVLA 2010 - Perry was the best player I saw play on Sunday. She looked like she should be playing with the 2008 age group based on her feel for the game. She showed all the qualities that translate to the international level in terms of checking her shoulder before receiving the ball, the control of the pace of the game, and a knowledge of when to do more to take over the fixture. Perry's goal was beautiful. A clean first touch and a well placed shot that was unstoppable for the goalkeeper, but her impact on the game went well beyond the one goal I saw her score. She's a name to know for the future, as she is going to be grabbing headlines for a long time.

Aleah Carvajal, MVLA 2010 - Carvajal is a bit of an artists on the field. A midfielder who does not shy away from the ball at any place on the field. She is at her best when the ball is on her right foot. I loved the passes she was trying to pull off on Sunday. She had some successful ones that created chances for her side. She is one of the most skillful players in the 2010 age group. Kiyomi Yoshimura was also excellent in the MVLA midfield.

Tori Williams, MVLA 2010 - Williams was one of the center backs for MVLA and did everything well for her side. She had the benefit of a stellar midfield in front of her, but when the ball got past that group, Williams cleaned up everything else. The defender also showed great decision-making skills in possession as she rarely put her teammates in a bad spot with her pass. She saw the next pass for her side and played the pass with the intention her teammate would continue the move. She's a great example of the modern center back. Lynn Byun and Jordyn Bellotti were also standouts in the defense for MVLA.

Jayden McCareins, FC Dallas 2010 - McCareins made a lot of saves for FC Dallas in the second half. She was sure handed in her approach and handled a variety of challenges on her net. Maura Hayes and Daniella Fregoso were also standouts for FC Dallas.

Giselle Nacelli, Slammers FC HB Koge 2010 - Nacelli was very impressive late in the win over VDA. She held off defenders. She flicked on long balls. She created chances. The forward did a bit of everything for her side. Winter Meskiel was also outstanding for Koge in the attack.

Camille Ford, VDA 2010 - Ford and VDA came up short in a tight battle between two of the top sides in this age group. Ford and Anna Change were bright spots late in the game.
