Prep Soccer Texas was in attendance and on Monday, April 14, we followed a handful of Boys' matches at both the Richland College and the Moneygram Soccer Park. With the tournament now concluded, we're featuring some of the players who made a strong impression in the matches we got to watch, and today our focus will be on the center backs:

Cruz was with AC Brea B08 EA2 in their 2-1 loss to [program_tooltip program_id='283639' first='Dallas' last='Hornets'] 08B Beta. With his team trailing for most of the match, he was very exposed on the backline as Brea pushed forward, but he did well, using his big frame to win duels and stop transition plays near the midfield line. Cruz also displayed good quality on the ball and had an active role in his team's buildup, displaying great accuracy to connect long passes. The center back also tried to help his team score what would be an equalizer in the final minutes, attacking the opposing penalty box and offering his teammates a big target for crosses.

Soo had a solid shift in the backline with Hawaii Rush 09B East in their 1-1 tie with [program_tooltip program_id='283624' first='Capital' last='City SC'] U16 MLS Next. Playing as a right-sided center back, he was very active and efficient, consistently stepping up to make strong defensive plays inside and around the penalty box. An extremely mobile defender, Soo was almost every time the first one to get to long passes, stopping what could become dangerous plays even before opponents got on the ball. He also displayed good confidence and quality on the ball and, on a few occasions, managed to turn defense into offense as, immediately after making a stop, he would find one of the team's forwards up top with a direct pass.

Roman-Garcia was in great form in central defense for [program_tooltip program_id='283624' first='Capital' last='City SC'] U16 MLS Next when they tied Hawaii Rush 09B East 1-1. He used his size very well to defend the penalty box and also thrived with his positioning, stepping up to intercept passes in the final third. Dealing with pacey forwards for most of the match, Roman-Garcia was forced to defend in space very often and handled his own, displaying great mobility and patience to wait for the right moment to tackle opponents. The center back also showed excellent quality on the ball and found his teammates in great spots in the attacking half, with long passes quite a few times.

Phillips and his Solar SC 07/08B ECNL team came back to secure a 1-1 tie with Bermuda's Cedar Bridge Academy with a last-minute goal. The team from Dallas pushed for that equalizer during the entire second half, and their defenders had a very active role in it, getting on the ball a lot to help the team move it around. Phillips was always very confident in possession and was unafraid of stepping into the attacking half to add an extra body to his team's offense. He was in a challenging position, as the more he stepped up, the more the opposing forwards had space to explore behind his back, but he handled it well, defending effectively in space.

Guillen-Lopez helped his team [program_tooltip program_id='283648' first='FC' last='Dallas'] U15 MLS Next secure a clean sheet in a 3-0 win over Mexico's Global Sporting Club 2010. Playing in the center of the team's back three, he was always ready to step up and anticipate opponents, but also displayed great mobility to cover his teammates and defend in space when needed. Guillen-Lopez was very strong in the air and had a strong presence in both boxes - he scored the team's second goal in the match after picking up a rebound following a corner kick. The defender was also very patient and reliable on the ball, not rushing plays and taking his time to pick the right passing option out of the back.
