The backbone of every team is typically the athlete between the posts. The goalkeepers are the unsung heroes of almost every match and the weight on their shoulders is heavy at all times. They get celebrated with big saves and wins, but then sometimes unfairly blamed for losses or missteps. It is sometimes a thankless position that only the mentally and physically strong can thrive in.

The 2026 ECNL National Playoffs and Finals have shown just how capable and strong the goalkeeper position has become in the ECNL ranks. This new generation of goalkeeper athletes are showing superior foot skills, explosive athleticism, command presence and most importantly, mental toughness.

It has been an impressive week for GK's at these Nationals. From PK shootouts to 1v1's, the goalkeepers have been putting on a show!

Here's 6 goalkeepers that have been dominant on the pitch:

There is one word to describe Mia ... Baller! Mia is a surehanded GK who understands her angles and breaks down attackers accordingly. She can make the quick reaction save and also make big plays on set pieces. Springfield single handedly sent her Concorde Fire Platinum G11 squad to the ECNL Title Match by saving THREE penalty kicks in the semi-final shootout. GK's are revered if they can save one PK in a shootout, but THREE? This girl has the right stuff! Look for Mia and her squad to battle until the very end versus a great So Cal Blues team in the ECNL National Championship match on Friday.

Birdwell showed poise and flashes of greatness during the 2026 ECNL Nationals this week. Maggie has great coverage of the net and moves great from post to post while opponents are on the attack. Birdwell can get tall and reach top corners and also has the ability to get low while set. Maggie finished strong with a clutch save diving to her right in the PK shootout versus Select ECNL G10 to win the match. She is going to be a GK to watch coming out of Texas.

One of my favorite keepers to watch out of the PNW is [player_tooltip player_id='348315' first='Jersie' last='Olsen']. She is a confident and dominant keeper in the box and adds a physical and aggressive presence you don't expect. This week, her and her XF Academy G11 team had some tough competition in the Champions League. Olsen made some big saves in pivotal moments to keep the scorelines close. Jersie gets big with an explosive push and can reach all 4 corners of the goal. She has many more big matches and big saves ahead of her.

Camryn and her Bethesda SC ECNL G11 team had a great run at this year's ECNL Nationals, making it all the way to the semi-final match against a tough SD Surf club. This was in part by the play of Camryn. She manages the defense well and they trust that she can make the stop if they get beat. Ensley has great push and sees the ball in flight well. She made some amazing full layout, top hand saves throughout the tourney. Camryn gets low to the ball quick and consistently dives forward to meet the ball where it's at. She's a force in net and looks to get even better as the seasons pass.

Lucy is a vocal keeper who demands attention. Her athleticism in the box is noticeable and is a problem for attacking opponents. Martis has physical height but gets low fast as if she was shorter. She does this by getting into her set position quickly on the attack. Lucy has a strong foot and can clear the ball effectively into space to help her attacking minded teammates transition to goal. Martis and her WNY Flash ECNL G10 will look to continue their success next season after a good 2-1 showing in the win/loss column at Nationals.

Ava is the GK you want commanding your defense. She has the size, skills and voice to manage anything that is thrown her way. Her Bethesda G10 team competed in the Showcase Cup this year and didn't get the results they wanted however, Ava shined when put to task. Her clearances are timely and accurate and has a voice that commands attention. Simpson has fantastic foot skills in and out of the box and is confident with the ball at her feet. She can even make an attacker miss with a quick, speedy touch to open up space to distribute. Ava has fantastic hands and can cover anything between the posts. This Tennessee commit is destined for great things.

Follow me on Instagram: @prepsoccerpnw or on X: @coldbrew25 for the latest rankings, news and articles about your favorite PNW High Schools, Club Teams and Athletes! DM's are always open for suggestions on which matches, athletes and teams I should watch and follow! Have a great finish to the 2026 season and as always, Keep Grinding!!
