Expert Analysis
JR Eskilson | Prep Soccer Scout
Huynh is a defender on the San Diego Surf 09 ECNL team. She plays left back for her club team. She is one of the top left-foot dominant players in the Southwest. She shines on one of the best teams and is often tasked with marking the top winger from the opposition. Huynh’s best attributes is in possession. She’s a wonderful passer. Her assist against Rebels last month was a pass that would make any college scout take notice. It feels routine for Huynh though. Her Surf squad is possession-dominant and needs that type of playmaking from the outside back, which is where she shines. Huynh has been a top performer at the start of the campaign.

Huynh is absolutely relentless and dogged in her pursuit. Once she locks on to an attacking player, it is pretty much over. She is so agile that she does not get juked easily. She dispossess well and she will be physically. She also gives full effort as she will read a play from afar and sprint to help break it up. She has good foot skills and can move the ball, showing good patience, vision and accuracy and she can really got down the line showing good straight line speed as well as the ability to tuck in and take defenders on in the middle of the pitch. She is a very well-rounded player.

Huynh was outstanding at left back for Surf. She is a two-way player. I thought her evolution and development as a key contributor of the Surf style of player was especially noteworthy. She has the capability to get to the end line and whip in a cross, but she is great at reading the game and knowing when to slip in a pass to a teammate and when to beat her defender on the dribble. Huynh is quickly putting together the game film to back up the claim as one of the best left backs in the country in the 09 age group.

The whole Surf defense deserves the spotlight for the performance in the championship game. They were sharp, unforgiving, and confident. Huynh impressed with her ability in the attack. She was excellent on the ball and made some charging runs forward. She can play as the overlapping outside back, but she is also great at cutting inside and playing in the playmaker role as an inverted winger.

was solid in goal. She didn’t need to do anything extraordinary in terms of saves, but she was consistent in her distribution and did well when called upon.
