Prep Soccer followed some of the action, watching four matches during the first two days of the event, and seeing eight of the 64 teams – Atascocita, Bridgeland, Cy-Fair, Deer Park, Fort Bend Clements, Friendswood, Lake Highlands and Memorial – make really interesting things on the field.
During this week, we’re navigating through each position and featuring some of the players from these teams that left a really strong impression. As we keep moving up the field, today’s article will list some of the most exciting midfielders.
Jocelyn Kianka
Jocelyn Kianka
Few players that I got to watch during the I-10 Shootout were as important to their teams as Kianka was for Fort Bend Clements. Playing in the center of the team’s midfield, she was constantly fed by her teammates, who counted on her skills to initiate offensive plays. Kianka showed a very complete game with the ball, connecting good passes and displaying an interesting ability to beat opponents off the dribble in tight spaces. She also has good presence inside the penalty box and was the team’s top scorer in the tournament.
Riley Hammond

Hammond was dominant from her defensive midfielder role with Bridgeland. Very good on both sides of the ball, she made a big impact on the game and was pivotal for the Bears’ success in the event. Hammond used her size and her excellent reading of the game to win balls in the middle and was really difficult to beat in individual matchups. She also displayed great quality on the ball and was tremendously valuable for her team when starting fast breaks after a tackle or helping them build out of the back.

A freshman, Chaump offered an interesting alternative for Lake Highlands in the midfield. Playing in more of an attacking role from the left, she displayed some strong offensive skills and the talent to push the team forward in a variety of ways. Chaump is very intelligent on the ball and is capable of making decisions very quickly, which helped her push the pace in transition and find good passes. She also moves really well off the ball, always offering a passing outlet to her teammates.
Brynn Farrar

Another defensive midfielder who has the ability to impact the game from a deeper position, Farrar was the hub of her Friendswood team. She’s very solid defensively and can win balls with interceptions or tackles and is very effective when patrolling the center of the field. Her ball distribution is also very accurate and intelligent, often getting her team out of pressure and initiating dangerous plays. Farrar can also make some good forward runs and score when she sees the opportunity.
Smith was the most talented player in Cy-Fair’s teams and, as so, played a central role in their offensive system. She was on the ball more often than anyone else and typically did good things when in possession. A lefty with good size, Smith can progress the ball up the field in a variety of ways as her repertoire includes the ability to find teammates on good spots and connect long passes but also an interesting technique to shield the ball as she moves forward through the middle
