The high school teams are split into eight brackets and each of them will have its final on Saturday. The first day of the tournament had the first-round matches, with winners advancing and losers moving to the consolation brackets.
Prep Soccer was in attendance for two of those encounters and here’s what we saw:
MEMORIAL 4 – 1 FRIENDSWOOD
Considered one of the strongest teams in the Houston area, the Memorial Mustangs confirmed the expectations with an emphatic 4-1 victory over the Friendswood Mustangs at the Katy Seven Lakes High School at the start of the afternoon.
All five goals happened in the opening half and the first of them was scored by Memorial’s senior fullback Cate Biar, who found the back of the net with an unlikely long-distance shot. The Mustangs were very strong in set pieces and scored twice from corner kicks – senior midfielder Logan Patterson was assisted by freshman midfielder Talia Camin Talia Camin M Memorial | 2026 TX to score the first and senior defender Adelhia Ghonda Adelhia Ghonda null | F Houston Memorial (TX) | 2023 TX got the second.
Ghonda assisted senior forward Zoe Seely on Memorial’s fourth goal while Friendswood got their only goal with junior midfielder Brynn Farrar right before the end of the first half.
Players of the Match
Originally a forward, Ghonda spent most of the match playing in the center of Memorial’s three-player backline. She was nothing short of excellent in the position, using her pace and athleticism to cover the other defenders and her skill on the ball to build from the back. Ghonda also had some dangerous runs upfield, causing some confusion among Friendswood’s midfielders and defenders. She spent some time playing in her original striker role and didn’t need much to score a goal from a corner kick and deliver an assist.
Logan Patterson
Logan Patterson
Patterson made a big impact on the game and was one of Memorial’s driving forces on offense. She did a little bit of everything on the offensive third, combining with the forwards and other midfielders to create chances, finishing from long distance and dropping deep to distribute the ball when needed. Patterson had great movement inside the penalty box and scored from a corner kick with a beautiful one-touch finish.
Indya Dotson
Indya Dotson
Dotson played two different roles across Memorial’s frontline and was a handful for Friendwood’s defenders on both of them. She spent most of the time playing wide on the right and was extremely productive with her pace and ability to dribble the ball. Dotson repeatedly got to the end line and sent some dangerous cross inside the penalty box, besides starting the play that generated Memorial’s fourth goal. Playing more centrally near the end, she had a couple of dangerous runs through the middle, but couldn’t get her shots in.
Brynn Farrar
Brynn Farrar
Farrar got Friendswood’s only goal in the match, but her importance to the team went well beyond that. She was a force in the center of the field, operating well on both sides of the ball and making a big impact in the Mustangs’ game. Farrar won several 50-50 balls in the middle with her ability to anticipate plays and helped Friendswood create plays with her excellent distribution. She was pushed to the backline in part of the second half and did a very good job there as well, helping the team keep a clean sheet in the last 40 minutes.
Gisele Kehres
Gisele Kehres
Kenhres was a bright spot in Friendswood’s midfield and had a good partnership going on with Farrar. Playing a little bit up in the field, she impressed with her ability to find good passes with her talented left foot. Kehres was instrumental in helping her team break Memorial’s pressure with her calm on the ball and her vision. She also did a good job pushing the ball forward and shielding it with her body and dribbling.
CY-FAIR 1 (4) – (2) 1 ATASCOCITA
The Cy-Fair Bobcats from Cypress and the Atascocita Eagles from Humble played a competitive and entertaining match at Jordan High School later in the afternoon. The match ended tied 1-1 after 80 minutes, but Cy-Fair was better from the penalty spot to win 4-2 and move forward.
The windy conditions affected the first half of the match as, despite showing some quality exchanging passes, both teams struggled to get the ball inside the penalty box. Atascocita scored first, with freshman Paige Kees finishing a fast break but Cy-Fair evened the score just a few minutes later with senior midfielder Magen Brotemarkle scoring from a penalty kick.
The match was then decided in a penalty kick shootout and, although both goalkeepers made saves, the Bobcats were more efficient, winning 4-2.
Players of the Match
Magen Brotemarkle
Magen Brotemarkle
Cy-Fair’s defensive midfielder had a big impact in the team’s victory, dominating the midfield and scoring twice from the penalty spot – once to tie the match and another time in the shootout. Brotemarkle was relentless in the center of the field, covering a lot of ground, winning balls back and helping her team progress with good moves in tight spaces and passes that broke defensive lines. Besides providing good coverage for the Bobcats’ backline, she also tried to push the team forward the entire time with good passing and long-distance finishes.
Smith was the offensive hub for Cy-Fair as basically every single play went through her feet at some point. She moved around well and got on the ball a lot, trying to connect with her teammates and make some solo runs through the middle. A lefty, Smith was very effective with her passing, finding teammates in good spots and disorganizing Atascocita’s defense. Her size also made of her a difficult matchup to anyone trying to stop her in the center of the field as she shields the ball incredibly well.
Sofia Vazquez
Sofia Vazquez
Vazquez was a stud on Cy-Fair’s backline, having great success in her defensive actions and interrupting countless Atascocita’s offensive plays. She started the match playing left-back and was really good in 1v1 duels. Even when she was beaten, Vazquez would have the pace and the determination to track back and try another tackle. She also displayed good skills on the ball when building from the back. After a solid first half, she was moved to center back during the second part of the match and was just as solid in that spot. She also scored the game-winner on the shootout.
Andrea Delgado Andrea Delgado D Atascocita | 2025 State TX

A defender with her club team Challenge SC, Delgado was used further up the field with Atascocita and was the team’s top player on the field. Playing out wide on the left, she was succesful on her offensive pushes more often than not and got to end line numerous times, sending good crosses into the penalty box. She also tried to score with some long-distance shots. Delgado created the team’s goal pretty much on her own as she won the ball back around the midfield line and found Kees free up top with an excellent pass.

Abigail Friday Abigail Friday M Atascocita | 2025 TX
Playing as an offensive midfielder, Friday was one of Atascocita’s most dangerous players. She roamed around the penalty box looking for open spaces and showed an interesting ability to create from anywhere on the attacking third. Friday displayed good pace and an intriguing dribbling ability in her solo runs, but also had good moments when combining with her teammates through the middle – she could never find a good look to finish, though. Friday also worked hard on the defensive side of the ball.
