I’ve attended several matches in the Houston area over the last few months, from pre-season tournaments to the playoffs, in order to provide the best coverage possible for Prep Soccer and compiled a list with several players that I got to see once or multiple times who left a very strong impression about their games.
Now, with the season concluded, it’s time we reveal their names, and today we’ll take a look at some center backs who did very well:
A freshman, Aras immediately became a centerpiece in the backline of her Fort Bend Clements team. Despite her young age, she reads the game extremely well and makes intelligent runs to cover her teammates on the flanks and steps up to challenge opponents in the middle when needed. Strong in the air, Aras added a great deal of defensive solidness to her team. She’s also very skilled on the ball, displaying great power and precision with long passes and shots from distance and collected ten assists during the season.
Abigail Scott
Abigail Scott
A senior, Scott led Deer Park’s defense in an strong way during the season, leading the team to eight shutouts in 12 district matches. She had a solid presence in the middle of the team’s defense, coordinating the other two center backs, using her size to win balls in the air and covering her teammates from the back. Scott was very good with anticipating plays, but also played hard when needed and was awarded as the District’s Defensive MVP. She also had a big role taking free kicks and ended the season with four goals and three assists.
Brooke Martin
Brooke Martin
Martin earned significant playing time with a loaded Bridgeland team as a freshman and made history with her teammates, getting the program its first postseason victories. Her presence strengthened the team’s backline and she wasted no time integrating to her teammates of the team’s playing system. Martin has the mental skills of a veteran, picking the right spots to place herself and displayed great calm and confidence with her plays. The center back also displayed excellent quality on the ball and helped the team maintain possession.
Kaleigh Lazenby
Kaleigh Lazenby
Lazenby was the strongest defensive player in her Foster team and had a big role with the Falcons, anchoring their backline. Also a track student-athlete, she has exceptional physical tools and sometimes had to turn to them to stop opponents as, playing for a very offensive-minded team, she was often the only one staying behind to to deal with counter-attacks. Lazenby was very dominant defensively, combining excellent positioning, great strengh and impressive pace, but also displayed excellent quality on the ball, connecting long passes and scoring from distance. She was awarded as the District’s Defensive Player of the Year.
Another freshman with excellent potential, Katz was a nice addition to Jordan, contributing to the team with her defensive skills. Capable of playing as a center back or a little further up as a midfielder, she’s very strong in the air and is also solid in 1v1 situations, using her physical tools, shaped with track and field competition, to dominate opponents. Katz is an excellent fit at midfield too because of her great quality on the ball. She finds good passes that break lines and likes to push up and get into the penalty box to finish chances.
Highlights
Mulholland has established herself as one of the top defenders in the entire state with Ridge Point and it’s easy to see why. A Baylor commit, she has great command of the backline and uses her excellent positioning to make timely stops around and inside the penalty box. Very athletic and intelligent, she’s extremely solid and consistent and made of the Panthers’ backline one of the best in Texas, taking the team to the State Tournament. Mulholland is also very good on the ball and helped Ridge Point dominate possession in most of their matches. She can also play on midfield.
Kathryn Lennon
Kathryn Lennon
Lennon was brilliant in anchoring the backline of her strong Seven Lakes team during the season. As a very physical defender, she likes to play very close to opposing attackers so she can overpower them and regain possession, but she’s also fast and intelligent enough to chase them on the flanks or in deeper positions if needed. Lennon is very consistent with her play and very rarely makes mistakes or is caught out of position. A University of Richmond commit, she’s also very calm and competent in possession, connecting good passes from the back and operating well with the players around her.
