This is such a difficult award to give. You have to take so many things into consideration. Statistics, level of play, a team's record & ranking are all big factors. Most of the time attackers are the one's who win this award. Strikers get the most goals and assists and therefore tend to carry more weight winning such a prestigious award. Important defensive stats like duel percentage, recoveries, and blocks are not recorded. Here are the biggest standouts from this season headed into the New Year.

She's a female version of Steven Gerrard. She can play anywhere and do anything on a soccer field, she has no apparent weaknesses. Currie has been impressive so far this season for Leigh. With 8 goals and 4 assists in a very strong league Currie is cooking this season and is a strong candidate for this years award.

The Lincoln Striker has put together a fantastic start to her senior season. With 20 goals so far this season she has a chance to set school records. If the USF commit keeps up her production she could have a chance to win this award.

Some of you were probably confused why I left her off of my freshmen list last week. It's because I was saving her for this one. She leads all scorers in California this season with 27 goals and another 5 assists in a remarkable 7 games played. To be doing that as a freshmen is nothing short of remarkable. That is 4.6 goal contributions per game. Could we see a Freshmen win this award?

Mitty is a Northern California powerhouse and Ms. Walsh runs the show. If Mitty wins it all this season she should be firmly in the conversation to win Gatorade Player of the Year even if her stat lines aren't as impressive as some other contenders. Her defensive presence and capabilities are truly unique.

The long-throw queen herself. A long throw in is so dangerous in high school soccer, it wreaks havoc for the opposition. The Oregon commit has 6 goals and 8 assists thus far this season which is a great return for a defensive midfielder. I believe she has an outside chance to win if her team picks up some championships.

Phillips is putting together quite the high school career. She's a junior and has scored 18 goals along with 5 assists in 13 games so far this season. That brings her overall high school goal tally to 75 to go along with 31 total assists. She's a machine.

Hernandez is putting together a season for the ages thus far for Hoover. She has 20 goals and 16 assists so far this season. 36 goal contributions this early in the season is a remarkable number. If she keeps it up and wins some championships with Hoover I think she should be strongly considered for GPOY.
